Tour de France 2026: Carapaz Wins Stage 20 on Dramatic Alpe... 2026

Tour de France 2026 delivered one of its most iconic moments as Richard Carapaz of EF Education-EasyPost conquered the legendary Alpe d'Huez climb to win stage 20. The Ecuadorian climber attacked early and held off a hard-charging Remco Evenepoel to take the victory, cementing his status as a grand tour contender. With the finish approaching, the crowd roared as Carapaz crossed the line alone, raising his arms in triumph after 4 hours 59 minutes and 39 seconds of relentless effort.

Carapaz's Stage 20 Victory and the GC Implications

Richard Carapaz's solo effort on the Alpe d'Huez ascent was a masterclass in pacing and power. He finished 26 seconds ahead of Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), while Sepp Kuss (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) took third place, 31 seconds back. Tadej Pogacar, already assured of the overall win, crossed over a minute later but retained his yellow jersey with a commanding lead.

The general classification remained unchanged at the top: Pogacar leads, Evenepoel is second, and Isaac Del Toro holds third. However, Carapaz's stage win moved him up to eighth overall, a significant boost for his team.

Key Performances on the Alpe d'Huez

The 21 hairpin bends of Alpe d'Huez have historically decided the Tour de France. Today, Carapaz proved his mettle against a stacked field. Evenepoel's second place showed his consistency, while Kuss—often a super-domestique—earned a rare podium finish. Pogacar managed his effort conservatively, already secure in yellow.

In the points classification, Mads Pedersen of Lidl-Trek holds an unassailable lead with 527 points, while Carapaz clinched the polkadot jersey for the King of the Mountains with 156 points—a remarkable achievement.
