Tour de France: Pogacar Faces Illness Threat as Team Struggles 2026

The Tour de France leader Tadej Pogacar faces a growing illness threat after a virus swept through his UAE Team Emirates XRG squad following Monday's rest day. With key teammates struggling and abandoning, Pogacar's commanding 4m 32s lead over Remco Evenepoel suddenly looks vulnerable ahead of critical mountain finishes on Alpe d'Huez.

UAE Team Emirates Illness Outbreak

On stage 18, Brandon McNulty abandoned the Tour with 21km remaining, while Tim Wellens admitted to a sore throat and Florian Vermeersch showed visible signs of struggle. Adam Yates also suffered a difficult stage the prior day. The team's overall health remains uncertain, raising questions about Pogacar's ability to defend the yellow jersey in the high mountains.

Pogacar's Response and Yellow Shorts Change

Pogacar downplayed the crisis, stating, "I think we can manage. It’s the third week, all the teams are suffering." However, his decision to swap his usual yellow shorts for black sparked further speculation among fans and analysts about the severity of the illness within the team.

Stage 18 Winner: Richard Carapaz

The Ecuadorian former Giro d’Italia champion won the stage after a daring solo attack, narrowly avoiding a collision with an errant fan early in the day. His win at Orcières-Merlette proved that even in a chaotic race, experience and courage can prevail.
