Wildfires in France and Spain Force Thousands to Flee Extreme 2026

Brutal wildfires in France and Spain have forced about 30,000 people to flee as extreme heat torches southern Europe, with a marine heatwave worsening the crisis. France requested EU assistance for a major blaze near its Atlantic coast, while Spain declared a national emergency in Madrid and Avila. President Macron called the situation “extremely tense,” particularly in Gironde, and praised reinforcements from Croatia, Portugal, Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

Evacuations and Response in France

In southwestern France, more than 18,800 people—including thousands of tourists—were evacuated from campsites and holiday homes as firefighters battled the inferno near the Atlantic coast. The French government activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, securing two Canadair aircraft, two Air Tractor planes, and two Black Hawk helicopters to assist firefighting efforts.

Spain’s National Emergency

Spain declared a national emergency in the Madrid region and the province of Avila, forcing 10,000 residents to leave their homes. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez deployed military emergency units and urged citizens to exercise “great caution.” The fires have afflicted areas including Avila, Leon, Toledo, and Madrid.
