Pokémon Go celebrates its 10th anniversary this month, and for many of us, it was more than a game—it was a gateway to finding wonder in the natural world. With over 800 million downloads worldwide, this augmented-reality phenomenon encouraged players to explore parks, streets, and neighborhoods in search of virtual creatures. But the curiosity it sparked didn't end at the screen. Instead, it evolved into a deeper appreciation for real-world flora and fauna.
From Pokémon to Real-World Discovery
The game’s core mechanic—using GPS and augmented reality to locate Pokémon—taught millions to look more closely at their surroundings. For parents like me, it became a bonding activity with children, especially those on the autism spectrum who found social interaction easier through shared gameplay. As noted in the article, my autistic son used the game’s gym battles to communicate with peers in ways he previously couldn’t.

Once my boys grew older, I didn’t abandon the habit. I simply swapped Pokémon for plants and birds. Apps like Seek (by iNaturalist) and Merlin Bird ID (from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology) now fill the same role. Seek identifies species using image recognition and awards digital badges—just like Pokémon badges. Merlin listens to bird songs and helps you identify species anywhere in the world.
Comparing Pokémon Go with Nature Apps
| Feature | Pokémon Go | Seek / Merlin Bird ID |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Catch virtual creatures | Identify real plants and birds |
| Technology | GPS + AR | Image recognition / audio analysis |
| Rewards | Pokémon badges, XP | Species badges, bird of the day |
| Social Element | Gym battles, raids | Competitive sharing (e.g., bird sightings) |
Both types of apps make the outdoors feel like an adventure. The thrill of discovering a new species mirrors the excitement of catching a rare Pokémon. I often imagine what a Pokémon-style battle between a red valerian and a field bindweed might look like!
