The Geopolitics World Cup final between Spain and Argentina is set to feature an unexpected star: Donald Trump, who has given himself a starting role in the bigliest occasion of all. The US president’s attendance at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday promises to inject a dose of political theater into the championship match.
Trump has largely steered clear of the tournament, skipping games and avoiding the spotlight alongside his good pal “Jonny” Infantino. However, his cameo off the bench earlier—when he lobbied Fifa to review Folarin Balogun’s red card—left a mark on the competition’s integrity. Now, the final demands a full presidential presence.

Trump’s Impact on the Geopolitics World Cup
The White House confirmed Trump’s attendance, setting up a potential re-run of last year’s Copa Gianni final at the same venue. During that event, Trump and Infantino handed the trophy to Reece James, with Trump refusing to leave the stage. “I knew he was going to be here but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy,” Chelsea star Cole Palmer said. “I was a bit confused.” The boos that rang out then are likely to echo again on Sunday.
Trump’s history with sports events shows a pattern of controversial appearances. At Madison Square Garden, he watched the New York Knicks’ sole NBA finals loss, claiming the crowd’s boos were “mostly cheers.” For the Geopolitics World Cup final, any hostility will likely be twisted into enthusiasm by the president’s team.
