The MLS new commissioner faces a pivotal moment as the league charts its next era. With Don Garber stepping down after 28 years, incoming commissioner Larry Berg must address critical issues from media deals to roster rules to elevate the league's standing.
Broadcast Future: The Apple Deal Dilemma
One of the most pressing priorities is renegotiating the broadcast strategy. The current Apple TV deal, worth $250 million annually, expires after the 2028-29 season. While innovative, the partnership has seen declining supplementary content and camera coverage, raising questions about audience growth.

Berg will need to decide whether to extend with Apple or explore traditional networks. Viewership data remains scarce, but Garber's 2025 statement of 120,000 average viewers per game offers a baseline. The 2026 World Cup could provide a boost, yet the league must build sustainable momentum.
Roster Rules and Competitive Balance
Another key focus is modernizing roster regulations. The current structure, with designated players and allocation money, often confuses fans and limits team building. Berg may push for simpler, more flexible rules to attract global talent while maintaining parity.
Potential Changes to Consider
- Increase salary cap flexibility for mid-tier teams.
- Revise the designated player rule to allow more strategic signings.
- Introduce a luxury tax to discourage excessive spending.
- Enhance youth development pathways.
Expansion and Market Growth
MLS has expanded rapidly, but new markets must be chosen wisely. Berg will evaluate potential cities based on stadium infrastructure, fan base, and corporate support. Balancing expansion with competitive integrity is essential.
Fan Engagement and Digital Innovation
To compete with other sports, MLS must deepen fan engagement. This includes improving the Apple TV experience, leveraging social media, and creating interactive content. Digital transformation will be a cornerstone of Berg's strategy.
Comparison of Broadcast Options
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV Extension | Innovative, global reach | Limited viewership data, declining content |
| Traditional Networks | Higher visibility, established audience | Lower revenue potential |
| Hybrid Model | Balanced approach | Complex negotiations |
Key Takeaways for MLS's Future
- Securing a robust broadcast deal is critical.
- Roster rule simplification can boost competitiveness.
- Expansion must align with long-term strategy.
- Fan engagement drives revenue and loyalty.
- Leadership transition requires clear vision.
