Scottish Woman Found Dead in Athens Suitcase: Arrest Made 2026

Greek authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of Scottish woman Elisabeth-Jane Ross, whose body was found in a suitcase in an abandoned building in central Athens. The 38-year-old charity worker, described as an “angel full of innocence and goodness,” had been in Greece for nearly three weeks before her tragic death. This shocking case has drawn international attention, and police have moved swiftly to bring the accused to justice.

Arrest and Charges in the Athens Suitcase Case

A 26-year-old Afghan national has been taken into custody and is expected to face charges of intentional homicide, robbery, and weapons violations. Police sources confirmed that the suspect allegedly confessed to the crime after being brought in for questioning by Greece’s homicide division. The arrest came just days after Ross’s body was publicly identified, following a painstaking investigation.

According to a police statement released on Sunday, a criminal file has been opened against the foreign national. Security officials also reported discovering “various arms – some real, some fake” at the suspect’s residence, located in the downtown Kypseli area near where the body was found. The suspect is expected to be formally charged on Monday.

Investigation and Key Evidence

Greek authorities worked closely with the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and Police Scotland throughout the investigation. A crucial breakthrough came when the suspect was caught on camera using credit cards belonging to Ross at ATMs. “The credit cards belonged to Ms Ross. That played a big role in leading us to him,” a source told the Guardian.

Ross, who had strong ties to the charity sector in Greece, was the daughter of a prominent Edinburgh lawyer. She had friends in Kypseli, where her body was discovered on 18 July by a homeless man in a derelict building that once served as a car park. The body was wrapped in cloth and placed inside a suitcase, left among rubbish and debris.
