There are many cities in the world worth seeing, although their individual advantages may vary. Some are popular for their excellent cuisine, others are considered party hotspots and others score points with easily accessible beaches. When it comes to city trips, the cultural experience is particularly important to many people. We recommend a new ranking from the online travel guide “Time Out”.
Deutschlands Kulturlandschaft ist vielfältig – sie umfasst zahlreiche bedeutende Städte sowie traditionsreiche Institutionen. Dennoch haben es weder Berlin, München noch Hamburg in das neue „Time Out“-Ranking der „20 besten Städte für Kultur weltweit“ geschafft. What makes the “best” cities for culture in the world?
For the ranking, “Time Out” surveyed more than 18,500 city dwellers worldwide about the cultural offerings in their hometown. The quality and affordability of both traditional cultural venues such as museums or theaters as well as more innovative formats (e.g. night-time exhibitions, pop-up festivals or creative community projects) were taken into account. Based on this data, a pre-selection was made in which the best-rated city per country was included. A jury group made up of cultural editors, city experts and other specialists then chose their favorites from this preselection. According to Time Out, the aim of the survey was to make visible those cities in which culture is particularly lively, diverse and accessible to locals and visitors alike.
The methodology increases the international diversity of the list, as only the best-rated cultural city per country was included. At the same time, it limits comparability and resulted in the Italian capital, for example, being missing from the list despite its overwhelming cultural importance. Instead, another Italian city is represented (see second place).
Platz 1: Paris
Zugegeben, die erste Platzierung ist keine Überraschung. „Time Out“ bezeichnet Paris (siehe Foto oben) als „Epizentrum“ der Kunst und hebt speziell das Louvre, das „größte und meistbesuchte Museum der Welt“, sowie das Musée d’Orsay, den Palais de Tokyo und die berühmte Pinault Collection im Bourse de commerce hervor. Auch die Pariser selbst wissen das Kulturangebot ihrer Stadt zu schätzen: Rund 96 Prozent der Befragten bewerteten es positiv, zahlreiche von ihnen als „fantastisch“. Ebenso erhielt die französische Metropole von der Kultur-Expertengruppe die höchste Punktzahl.

Florence is in second place in the ranking. Here, 73 percent of the residents surveyed still rated the city's offerings as “good” or “excellent”. In the end, the jury's evaluation was decisive. In the Time Out publication, a local author recommends visiting the Tuscan city soon because "amongst all the historic splendor, there's plenty of modern culture to explore this summer." Among other things, she names an open-air cinema in the garden of Villa Bardini and a contemporary dance performance in the Roman amphitheater in Fiesole.
