The city of Lugo in the hinterland of the Costa Verde, built on behalf of Emperor Augustus more than 2,000 years ago, is a particularly attractive destination for lovers of ancient monuments. The city wall, which is approximately three kilometers long and up to twelve meters wide, is completely accessible and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The unique structure is accessible free of charge.
The Cathedral of Lugo
In the middle of the old town there is another spectacular sight: the towering Lugo Cathedral from the 12th century (see also large photo above). The architecture of the church is a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and neoclassical styles. The church belongs to the Archdiocese of Santiago de Compostela.
Starting point for pilgrims
Lugo is exactly 105 kilometers on foot from Santiago de Compostela and is located on the “Camino Primitivo”, the oldest of the Ways of St. James. Groups of pilgrims regularly set off from the city to hike through the Galician landscape to the famous pilgrimage site.
