A woman approached a German beach holidaymaker and offered her a sprig of rosemary, writes the “Mallorca Zeitung”. “She flattered the woman,” it continues, “and took advantage of the resulting inattention to take off the chain that she was wearing around her neck.” According to the newspaper, which cites Spain's national gendarmerie, the Guardia Civil, the necklace was worth around 10,000 euros. The perpetrator also stole her victim's wallet from her handbag.
The police finally caught the perpetrator and an accomplice near the crime scene. Nevertheless, Mallorca holidaymakers should be careful. The “rosemary scam” appears to be a currently common method of theft on the Spanish holiday island.
