Disposable barbecue ban calls are intensifying in England and Wales as farmers and landowners warn of severe wildfire risks from dry conditions. The National Farmers Union, firefighters, and MPs are urging retailers to stop selling these single-use grills to prevent devastating fires.
Why the Disposable Barbecue Ban Is Critical
The UK has faced record heatwaves and the worst drought since 1976, leaving vegetation extremely dry and prone to ignition. A stray spark from a disposable barbecue can quickly escalate into a wildfire, destroying crops, harming livestock, and damaging soil health.

Paul Tompkins, deputy president of the NFU, emphasized that a single match or spark can wipe out months of hard work in minutes. He called for retailers to remove disposable barbecues from shelves and for local authorities to issue public space protection orders.
Current Retailer Response
Most big supermarkets have already halted sales, but smaller shops, DIY stores, and online platforms still sell them. MP Jon Pearce has written to retailers, urging them to stop selling these products entirely.
Wildfire Impact in 2023
Wildfires have affected every region of the UK this year, with over 20,000 hectares burned. Recent fires include the Rhondda Valley in Wales, the Cairngorms in Scotland, and a blaze near Sizewell B nuclear plant in Suffolk.
These fires threaten not only agriculture but also infrastructure and public safety. The ban aims to reduce accidental ignitions during high-risk periods.
Comparison of Fire Risks: Disposable vs. Reusable Barbecues
| Factor | Disposable Barbecue | Reusable Barbecue |
|---|---|---|
| Ignition Control | Low – often placed directly on ground | High – usually on stable stands |
| Heat Retention | Long-lasting, unpredictable | Controlled by user |
| Disposal Risk | High – often left smoldering | Lower – can be extinguished properly |
| Environmental Impact | Single-use waste | Reusable, less waste |
Key Takeaways for Consumers
- Support the temporary ban by avoiding disposable barbecues during dry spells.
- Use reusable alternatives with proper fire safety measures.
- Always check local regulations and fire warnings before outdoor cooking.
- Extinguish all fires completely and dispose of ashes safely.
