Building a Rustic Book Shelf/TV Stand, this is a simple design, easy to make and relatively low cost (less than $50). As with the desk, the design is very meaty and should withstand any abuse you want to throw at it. Also, these pictures are obviously not of his room.
Step 1: Tools/Materials
Tools:
- Table or miter saw
- Drill bits
- Pocket hole template (optional)
- Tape measure
- Sander
Materials:
- 2″ x 12″ x 20′ (x1)*
- 2″ x 4″ x 8′ (x3)
- 1″ x 4″ x 12′ (x1)
- Cover screws (x50)
- Glue
- Wood filler
- Finishing or painting
*2″ x 12″ Must be 1.5″ x 11.25″. The board purchased is only 11″ wide. Check this dimension before cutting the pieces
Step 2: Design

You will be building this drawing. Please note that everything is color coded for easy reference.
Cuts

We use a table saw for all straight cuts. A miter saw was used for the 45 degree angles
Step 4: Assembly of the pillars from step 1

Attach 3 pillars (blue color) to the supports as shown. Nails or screws can be used. Countersink the holes if using screws. Please note that glue is additionally used for each joint in the construction.
Step 5: Assembly of the pillars from step 2

Add the angle brackets as shown. We used deck screws (3.5″ long) for this fixture. Build 3 pillar assemblies this way. These will be used for the bottom row.
Before assembling the next set of pillars, you must decide on the shelf attachment method. For the first set of pillar sets, this is not a problem as access is available from the bottom and the middle shelf will be covered with another pillar set. A clean method is to use a pocket hole jig on the angle brackets before building the pier assemblies. This will allow you to attach the pillar assemblies to the shelf from the bottom sides. If you don't have this option, you can use a nail gun or standard hole/countersink gun. Wood filler or plugs can be used to cover the screw heads.
Step 6: Fixing the abutment assembly

Attach 3 of the pillar mounts to one of the shelves, as shown. Since this is the bottom side, we used deck screws for the fixture.
Step 7: Attach the legs

Place the legs on the other side of the shelf. We use nails for this accessory. Be sure to avoid the location of the screws.
Step 8: Rotate the assembly

It should look like this.
Step 9: Add the Second Shelf

Attach the next shelf to the top side of the pillars. Countersink the holes if using screws.
Step 10: Add additional pillars

Now comes the hard part: how do I connect the next set of pillars? If you took the pocket hole jig approach mentioned in STEP 5, the mounting method will be with screws through the sides of the angle brackets. Other options: gunnails (3.25″ nail) between pillars, screws/countersinks from ends (easy access) or between pillars.
Step 11: Top Shelf Attachment

Attach the top shelf. Focus on pocket hole jig or nails/screws.
Step 12: Sanding and finishing

Add wood filler or plugs if screws were used. Paint or use a wood finish. Thanks for reading!
