How to Remove Black Stains on Wooden Furniture with Oxalic Acid, iron oxide stains on wood are usually dark stains caused by prolonged exposure to water and/or metal.

Iron oxide reacts with the tannins in the wood and stains it black.

Wood can be dyed black intentionally in the same way, and that is called ebonization.

I've seen some amazing results from furniture restorers using oxalic acid to remove such stains, but I couldn't find it locally and was never able to order it online through Ebay or Amazon.

I am going to transmit these basic steps and add some of my own tips to be able to make a guide on how to remove these stains.

Materials and supplies:

• Bar Keeper’s Friend or similar powdered metal polish containing oxalic acid.
• Water
• Paper towels
• Chip brush (optional)
• Plastic paint scraper
• Rigid nylon brush (optional)

Step 1: Evaluate the stain

If the stain is dark, almost black, it is likely from exposure to water, but it could also be from ink, etc. If the stain is dark red, it's probably from wine or food or something else.

This method will only work to remove dark iron oxide stains.

It won't hurt to try, but it's probably more effective to whiten/sand/refinish other types of stains.

If the wood has a polyurethane finish or other surface coating and you see a stain, it is stained underneath, and that coating should be removed first.

If the piece has an oil finish or is raw wood, you do not need to do anything to prepare the surface.

Step 2: Make the pasta

Add a little water to the Bar Keeper’s Friend until you have a consistency you can work with.

The proportions are not important, but you don't want it to be too wet.

Excess water will only raise the grain. All you need to paste is to sit on the wood surface.

You don't need it to soak yourself.

Step 3: Clean it

Always test in an inconspicuous area first!

There shouldn't be any negative effects, but it's good to check on a small area rather than the entire surface, if it exists.
For the first application, target the stains.

Wipe or brush it and wait until it dries (15-30 minutes).

While it is drying, you should see the white paste turn slightly yellow. This is good.

Step 4: Scrape

I scraped the dried mixture and vacuumed it up instead of wetting the surface and wasting paper towels.

After the first application, you should already see a big difference. If not, then this method probably won't work on the stain.

Step 5: Second, Third, Fourth Application

Mix another batch and apwash it the same way as before.

When the stains are gone, you will notice that the area you cleaned will be lighter than the surrounding areas.

For the next application, apply the mixture to the entire surface of the piece to help blend it.

Step 6: The final result

It only took 3 applications to get the stains to a point where I didn't care anymore. Other applications will remove the stain completely.

My plan is to touch up the desk top at some point, first applying oxalic acid to any other stains, and then scrubbing with #0000 steel wool and oil to clean away the grime and leave most of the patina that builds up.

Final tips:

Because oak has a very open grain, much of the mixture will be trapped in the grain of the wood. I used a stiff nylon brush in a circular motion to remove it.

This is probably not necessary in other wood species.

If your refinishing process involves steel wool, be very careful to remove all metal chips from the surface, especially with Oak.

It is recommended to use brass wool or synthetic wool to avoid this.

When the metal particles get wet in the future, they will start the entire staining process again and you will have to reapply it. In practice, steel wool is fine, just be sure to blow the piece with compressed air and polish it with microfiber to remove all the chips.

When sanding, do not sand too deep. As you trim further toward the surface, you may expose more of the stain, and then you will have to reapply the oxalic acid again. That's all!
