Low-Cost and Easy Installation of Indoor Brick Floors When considering what material to use for a floor, few people look beyond a concrete slab, with something like tile or carpet as a finish. For us, however, there were several factors that made a stabilized compressed earth brick (SCEB) floor much more attractive, including the cost, skill and time required.

Step 1: Materials

Materials:

• Compressed earth blocks
• Filtered sand
• Acrylic or oil-based sealant or varnish

Tools:

• Circular saw with masonry blade (optional)
• 2 levels, one small, one larger (longer)
• Rubber mallet
• 2 boards to stand on. You don't want to stand in the sand as your feet will make big dents. If you stand on a board, your weight is spread out and the smooth surface of the sand is not compromised.
• Surgical tape. The person placing the brick should consider taping their fingertips with surgical tape. This helps protect them without compromising dexterity.
• Roller and brush
• Broom

Step 2: Preparation

Prepare and level the subfloor, adding any vapor barrier, heating system and insulation if desired. Place a 1-inch layer of well-screened sand over the entire area. Compact and level the sand. The easiest way to do this is to bury and level a piece of square tubing in the sand on each side of the room, so that the top of the metal lines up with the level you want the sand to be.

Next, you join another piece of metal between the 2 pieces of square tubing, so that it sits on top of them, and drag it back and forth over the area until it is smooth.

Choose your pattern before you begin and estimate the number of bricks you will need. Running is often the easiest way to get your feet wet, but none of them are difficult.

Step 3: Cut bricks

No matter what pattern you decide to use, you will need some cut bricks. Try to estimate roughly how many you will need for your head start and cut them ahead of time. Those needed at the other end of the rows can do so once the rest of the flooring has been laid. Cut the bricks with a circular saw with a masonry blade. If you are not too particular about the edges of the cut bricks, it is much easier to break them rather than cut them.

Step 4: Laying the floor

• Place each brick, one by one, where you want it to go.
• Using the long level, check to make sure it is level with previous bricks or existing floors. With the short level, make sure the brick itself is level in all directions. You should also check that it is well aligned with the wall.
• Use the rubber mallet to hit the brick against its neighboring bricks. And tap down to get the correct level.

When you get to the opposite end of the wall from where you started, and you don't have a brick that fits the space, leave it. You should make all those bricks last. Even before the floor is finished, you can walk on it. Do not step near unfinished edges.

Step 5: Perimeter

For edges, you may have to measure each space and cut or break bricks to fit. Alternatively, you can fill the gaps with very fine concrete when making the perimeter.

Once you have all the bricks in place, you can fill the perimeter, between the bricks and the walls, with concrete. This doesn't use much concrete, and can be done in half an hour. Check your sand and then trowel the concrete and level with the top of the bricks.

Step 6: Filling Cracks

Once all your bricks, including the edge bricks, are in place, work fine sand into the cracks.

Allow the floor to sit for a couple of days, and then sweep more sand into the cracks. Repeat this several times until the sand no longer settles.

Step 7: Sealing

To seal the bricks so you can sweep and wet them, use an acrylic or oil-based concrete sealer or varnish, at least two coats. Until the bricks are covered with fine dust (as you gradually wear them down). This is fine for a patio or outside deck, but inside it is not as acceptable.

First use a small can and/or brush to squeeze the sealant into all the cracks. Once set, use a roller to spread the varnish on the surface of the brick.

The sealant will darken the natural color of the bricks. Most concrete sealers and varnishes have a strong odor. Always provide adequate ventilation and plan to keep those windows open for a few days.
