We Show You How to Make an Incredible PVC Saxophone, with the sounds of your plastic instrument emitting its own sounds that are a mix between John Coltrane and a flock of wild geese, you will be playing and jumping in no time. I like this project as an introduction to the physics of waves, acoustics and music in general. And it's just a good time.
Materials:
- PVC (3/4″ or 1/2″ works great)
- 4 PVC Elbow Joints
- 1 plastic funnel
- 1-piece firm plastic (from packaging works great)
- Adhesive tape

Tools:
- Hacksaw (or PVC cutter)
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Drill
Let the music play!
Step 1: Launch your tab

If you've ever accidentally talked to someone who plays a woodwind instrument, you've probably heard a lot about reeds.
Start with your PVC pipe and draw a diagonal line. I found that around 30 degrees works well. Use a hacksaw and give it a cut.
Trim some of the "tall" end of the diagonal cut so that it is slightly rounded. This will make the sound of the reed much easier to play.
To take a look at the incredible science of reed instruments, check out this link to get started (link)..
Step 2: Finish your tab

Cut a tongue of firm plastic the size of the opening in your PVC cutout. Leave a little glue on the end for the ribbon. Cover it tightly towards the bottom of the diagonal cut, leaving the top free.
There should be a small space between the PVC and the transparent plastic. Otherwise, clean the PVC some more.
Now try touching your tongue by simply putting it in your mouth and breathing. You may have to experiment with the bite and depth a bit to find where the note is made.
As air is blown over the reed, it is forced to move back and forth at the resonant frequency of the open-air tube.
That buildup of sound waves makes a huge wave of pressure on your audience's ears.
Pitch is directly related to the length of the tube at the end, which individual reed instruments modify by opening and closing air holes.
SAFETY NOTE:
Cutting round material on band saws by hand can be potentially dangerous.
For most cuts, people prefer to use a sled in case the material starts to spin out of control. Angled cuts are less risky, but it's something to keep in mind. Hacksaws are a great substitute if you want.
Step 3: Cut Your Saxophone

The basic "way" of the PVC saxophone is to cut four additional lengths of PVC in addition to the mouthpiece, and connect them todes with the elbow joints.
When cutting lengths, the main pipe where the finger holes will be placed is the longest.
Use a hacksaw or PVC cutter to make any wild size or shape you want. The total length of your pipe will affect the notes played, so you can mess around with a number of length combinations.
Then, drill holes in the longer PVC pipe to make finger holes for play.
You can experiment with different spacing to get different harmonics, but ultimately, the closer the exposed holes are to the mouthpiece, the larger the note will be played.
Healthy things about science:
The sound created inside is due to standing waves created in what is effectively a closed column of air. To see the science of harmonics and closed wind instruments.
To see specifically how saxophones work, consult this manual (in English). A significant difference in the sound of a brass saxophone and our PVC saxophone is that our spine is not conical or arched, but cylindrical.
When you open air holes with your fingers, you are changing the length of the wave that resonates most strongly in the tube.
In a simplified way, this is similar to shortening the length of the tube to wherever the exposed orifice is closest to the nozzle.
Step 4: Amplify

You can't keep your PVC music all to yourself. Let those cool shades fly!
Cut the end of the plastic funnel, hot glue it, and stick it in or around the end of your saxophone to amplify your sound a bit, as well as give it an aesthetic touch.
Step 5: Release your inner musician

Well, the music won't play itself! Start your path to Go Talent one plastic note at a time.
You can honk and honk all day, and when you're ready, take it apart and make a different design. All parts are easily interchangeable, and I'm excited to see what variations you come up with. Here is a reference and example video:
To learn more about the physics of sound, you will have to study more about the topic...
Have fun, happy playing, and as always, keep exploring. Greetings!
