How to Make a Homemade Disc Sander, after trying to make a disc sander by connecting the shaft of the sanding disc directly to the drill chuck, and seeing that it was not a good idea, I made an axle with bearings to put between the sanding disc and the drill chuck.
So, in this entry we are going to see how to make a homemade disc sander powered by a drill, but using said shaft with bearings.

To make this homemade wood sander, the first thing I need to make is a new stand for the drill.
But this time, instead of a support for the drill, it will be more of a support for the shaft with bearings.
Then, I cut four strips of plywood and glue them together two by two.
And now, holding the two groups of two pieces together with clamps, I use a cup drill bit to drill the hole for the bearings.
I need to make a drill as straight and vertical as possible, so I use the drill press.

So, after screwing one of the pieces to a piece of plywood, I can now install the shaft with bearings which will hopefully help keep this wood sander stable.
The diameter of the hole I drilled is a little smaller than that of the bearings, and I have to put some pieces of cardboard to adjust the position of the plywood pieces.

After checking that the shaft rotates well, and that I can attach the drill without problems, I install a first plywood disc with a little epoxy resin, some washers and some nuts.
I cut this disc with the circle cutting guide and drilled a hole the diameter of the threaded rod. This way I was able to screw it onto the rod.

And I cut the piece of threaded rod that sticks out.
Now it's time for one of the most complicated parts in the manufacture of this homemade disc sander: grinding the disc.
And the plywood disc will hardly be perfectly vertical to the axis of rotation.
Then, I put a simple wooden table in front of the disc (the same one that I will use to work with the disc sander), and with a chisel or a gouge and a lot of patience I try to leave the disc flat and perpendicular to the axis of rotation.
And I also grind the back of the disc.

Once the disc of this homemade wood sander is ground, I am going to glue another thinner disc on the front.
This serves to hide the nut and washer that protrude in front of the first disc, so I had to make a hole in the shape of the nut and a recess with the diameter of the washer.

Then I glue the disc and hold it with several clamps while the glue dries.
For this it is better to dismantle the shaft with bearings from the support of the homemade wood sander.
And when the glue is dry I cover the front hole with a little wood paste and sand it to make it smooth.
And finally I grind the edge to make the two plywood discs even.

All I have left to do is cut out a piece of sandpaper the same size as the sanding disc and stick it on with stencil adhesive.
I use a medium grain one, since it is usually the one I use the most for sanding wood.
Some of you ask me how to change the sandpaper on this disc sander, and the truth is that the old sandpaper is very easy to remove, since the stencil adhesive does not leave it stuck like glue.
Pulling on it usually comes out almost completely without problems.
It occurs to me that giving it a little heat would make it even easier, but I haven't tried it.

And now I can sand wood or plywood with this disc sander.
After using it for a while I am delighted with this sanderhomemade, since it works very well and allows you to be very precise when sanding.
Now I also have a sanding drum that is very easy to make and use.
And these wood sanders make work much easier in our carpentry workshops.
