Simple Desk/Build a Lovely Low Cost Table 2026

Simple Desk/Build a Lovely Table Low Cost, this project was built from the top of an old desk. If you prefer, the top can be made from 2x12.

Step 1: Tools/Materials

Tools:

• Saw (table or miter)
• Drill and bits
• Pocket hole template (optional)
• Nail gun (optional)
• Sander
• Tape measure
• Pencil

Materials:

• Board (48″ x 24″ or two 2x12x48)
• Five 8 foot long 2x4s (think ahead with cuts)
• An 8 foot long 1×4
• Screws
• Glue
• Wood filler
• Painting

Step 2: Cut wood for the legs

You will build two identical leg assemblies. Cut the following pieces:

Step 3: Assembling the leg from step 1

Attach the “Leg – Horizontal – Thin” sections to “Leg – Vertical”. Drill and use a countersink drill bit for the holes. I used 2 ½” deck screws and glue for this accessory.

Step 4: Assembling the leg from step 2

Add “supports” as shown. I used a nail gun and glue for these connections. A second option is to use a pocket hole jig.

Step 5: Assembling the leg from step 3

A “Leg – Horizontal – 45 degrees” to the top and bottom of the leg assemblies as shown. I used a nail gun and glue for this accessory.

Step 6: Assembling the leg from step 4

Before installing the “Leg – Horizontal – Thick” sections, pre-drill the pocket hole template holes in 2 of the 4 pieces. These holes will be used to secure the legs towards the top. Attach “Leg – Horizontal – Thick” to the top and bottom of the leg assemblies as shown. Again, I used a nail gun and glue for this part.

Step 5: Assembling the leg in step 5

Add the legs as shown.

Step 8: Repeat

Repeat the process to assemble the second support.

Step 9: Cut the Horizontal and Angle Brackets

Cut the horizontal and angle supports as shown. Think about this step and add the pocket holes to the ends and to 2 of the horizontal pieces that will be used to secure the top.

Step 10: Attach the horizontal and angle supports

Place the horizontal supports as shown. This step will most likely require two people.

Optional: Add angle brackets. Please note that I did not include this step in this version due to the smaller size. The large version shown below includes the supports…

Step 11: Painting

Wood filler could be used at this point, it depends on how "rustic" you want the desk to look. Assembly as desired. I painted both sections at this point as it is easier to paint separately.

Step 12: Place the top

Attach the top using the pocket hole drilled holes. Please note that screws or nails can be used instead of the pocket hole jig attachment method. Just offset the holes and use wood filler to cover the holes.
