Best beaches in Mexico to Visit on Your Stay
Don't think it's an easy choice. Cancun or Acapulco are the most famous names, but there are thousands of beaches that touch the Caribbean Sea, the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of California, and there are some for all tastes: you can enjoy secret corners and romantic sunsets or crazy parties and paradisiacal places... Shall we go?
1. Paradise Beach, Tulum
With its white sand and crystal-clear waters, Playa Paraíso de Tulum is one of the most iconic spots in the Riviera Maya and all of Mexico. It is located just a few minutes from the impressive Tulum ruins , the only Mayan ruins that are next to the sea.
Here, the sand is so white and fine it looks like talcum powder, and the turquoise waters are incredibly clear, with shades ranging from deep blue to jade green.
2. Balandra Beach, Baja California Sur
Balandra Beach , in spectacular Baja California Sur, is like a natural saltwater pool, surrounded by mountains and with waters that seem to melt into shades of light blue and turquoise. The tranquility of this beach makes it the perfect place to relax , kayak and walk through the shallow water , which barely reaches your waist in many places.
In addition, the famous " Hongo de Balandra ", a mushroom-shaped rock formation, is the emblem of this beach and an ideal spot for photos.
3. Hidden Beach, Marietas Islands
If we're talking about beautiful and special beaches, this one would take the gold medal! It's located in the Marietas Islands and is famous for being "hidden" under a giant crater : an open vault where the light pours in, illuminating its crystal-clear waters and white sand.
The area is only accessible via boat tours and once there you have to enter through a tunnel, which makes the experience even more special. If you want to go, book in advance as a limited number of people are allowed in per day to protect the ecosystem and conserve the biodiversity of the area.
4. North Beach, Isla Mujeres
Playa Norte, on Isla Mujeres , is known for its calm, turquoise waters. It's perfect for families and those looking to relax in calm waters . Plus, the beach has palm trees, a laid-back atmosphere, and food and drink options right on the shore.
And if you're into snorkelling, the area around Playa Norte is home to schools of colourful fish and the occasional friendly manta ray. Here, the pace is up to you: whether you want to lie on the sand all day or alternate between swimming and walking, Playa Norte has a laid-back charm that invites you to stay until you see the sun set on the horizon.
5. Lovers Beach, Cabo San Lucas
We continue with the best beaches in Mexico by telling you about Lovers' Beach , one of the most iconic destinations in Cabo San Lucas .
Located between majestic rock cliffs, this beach is not only beautiful, but it is also a unique place where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean . On one side is the calm Sea of Cortez, ideal for swimming and snorkeling, and on the other, the wildest waves of the Pacific.
6. Sayulita Beach, Riviera Nayarit
This corner of the Riviera Nayarit , which is full of bohemian and surfer charm , is another of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico and is ideal for those looking for something more than sun and sand. And that? Easy: here you can learn to surf on waves perfect for beginners or simply enjoy the spectacle of experienced surfers sliding by at sunset.
The town is also colorful and vibrant, with streets full of murals, local craft shops and markets where you will find everything from jewelry to Huichol art.
7. El Cielo Beach, Cozumel
We end this list of the best beaches in Mexico by taking you to heaven… no, we haven't gone crazy: El Cielo is one of the most special spots in Cozumel . Do you know why it's called that?
Its name is no coincidence: “El Cielo” owes its fame to the hundreds of starfish that inhabit its shallow waters, visible when snorkeling. This place can be reached only on boat tours , which makes it even more special. In addition to starfish, you can encounter manta rays and schools of colorful fish, which make the experience feel like swimming in a natural aquarium.
8. Mahahual and Xcalak
These two destinations, at the southern end of the Costa Maya, are the best for exploring the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef , the second longest on the planet after Australia. And the good thing is that their shores are just a few meters from the coral formations, so it is really easy to get to good diving or snorkeling spots on daily tours or in small boats run by locals.
On our last trip to Mexico we took the opportunity to visit Xcalak , a quiet spot where we can disconnect for a few days from the hustle and bustle of the Riviera Maya. It is true that the beach may not be the best, but we think it is the perfect place for those looking for great diving trips , with incredible biodiversity (including saltwater crocodiles and manatees) in a relaxed atmosphere.
