There is hardly a type of pizza that causes as much discussion as Pizza Hawaii. Especially in Italy, the combination of ham and pineapple is extremely frowned upon. Italians probably won't like the latest creation from a popular Australian pizza chain at all. Here too, an essential ingredient is fruit.
Some people love the combination of savory and sweet, while others gag just at the thought of eating ham and pineapple together. And so, unsurprisingly, the new pizza creation from the Australian pizza chain Bubba Pizza is also causing quite a stir. This is topped with smoked ham, mozzarella and orange slices.
“Culinary abomination”
So basically it's a classic Hawaiian pizza where the pineapple is replaced with orange. But this small change was enough to trigger a wave of outrage online. This is what the British “Daily Mail” writes, among others, and refers to a discussion that broke out on the Reddit platform about pizza with orange.
One user called the creation a “culinary abomination”. "I like orange too. But orange can never go with pizza. I'm out," writes another. "Off to prison," commented another user.
Other Reddit users can already imagine the orange topping on the pizza. "There are a lot of salads with fruit. Is this so far from a prosciutto and orange salad?" one user asked. “I would try a piece but I'm not willing to spend money on it,” another person wrote.
Italians get the pizza with orange for free
The inventors of the “Ham and Orange” pizza take the sometimes nasty comments with humor. In a video shared by the pizza chain on Instagram, a Bubba Pizza employee says: "We know that you Italians don't like pineapple on pizza, that's well documented. But we know that you love oranges, that's your favorite fruit, especially in Sicily." The pizza is “super juicy and super sweet” and they want to unite Italians and Australians who love Hawaiian pizza.
Anyone who shows an Italian passport at one of Bubba's branches can even get the orange pizza for free. Whether there will actually be Italians who would try this pizza as a gift remains to be seen at this point.

The unusual surface has already convinced one Italian. Pizza maker Tony Fazio, who developed the dough recipe for Bubba Pizza, explained when asked by Sunnytrips: "As an Italian, I was skeptical at first. But the ham and orange pizza is a real hit. It offers a perfect balance between the sweetness of the orange and the spicy ham and is a nod to the citrus flavors that Italians have loved for generations."
