Farage Claims Burnham Brexit Debate Is Career's Biggest Boost 2026

Nigel Farage has declared that Andy Burnham's reopening of the Brexit debate is the "biggest boost in my career," injecting fresh energy into the Reform UK leader's political agenda. Farage's comments came ahead of a major rally in Doncaster, where he emphasized that the revived discussion has created a "huge flank" for his party to exploit.

Farage's Strategic Playbook

Farage, looking tanned and relaxed, told reporters that Burnham's remarks had "put me back into the debate." The Reform UK leader is clearly relishing a return to the playbook that proved successful during the 2016 referendum. He dismissed polls suggesting that up to 59% of the public favour rejoining the EU, arguing that such figures ignore the costs involved.

"Of course they do, until you tell them it'll cost 25bn quid a year, until you tell them it'll mean joining Schengen, until you tell them it will mean actually having to recommit to joining the euro," Farage said. He added that the Leave side hasn't made its arguments since 2016, while Remainers have been vocal every week.

The Burnham Factor

Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has recently sparked controversy by suggesting that rejoining the EU could be among options the government should consider. His comments at the Labour conference have reignited a debate that many thought was settled. Farage believes this is a major political misstep by Burnham.

"I actually think that Burnham has made a very big political mistake here," Farage stated. This misstep, according to Farage, provides Reform UK with a golden opportunity to rally support by focusing on the potential downsides of EU membership.

Impact on UK Politics

The reopening of the Brexit debate could have significant implications for UK politics. With Reform UK positioning itself as the party of Brexit, Farage aims to capitalise on any perceived backsliding by other parties. The rally in Doncaster is the first of many planned across Britain, focusing on what Reform UK would do in its first 100 days in government.

Key Takeaways

• Farage sees Burnham's comments as a major boost for Reform UK.
• Polls show public opinion on rejoining the EU is nuanced and cost-sensitive.
• Reform UK plans a series of rallies to outline its first 100 days agenda.
• The Brexit debate is far from over and could reshape political alliances.
