The Democratic party is in dire need of a mutiny as House Democrats shift on Israel, with nearly half voting to block $3.3bn in weaponry. Top leaders like Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer cling to an old playbook of unwavering support, but voters are demanding change.
Why House Democrats are shifting on Israel
A recent New York Times poll found that 74% of Democratic voters oppose additional military support to Israel. This shift spans all age groups, signaling a fundamental change in the party's base. The moral bankruptcy of ignoring these numbers amounts to political malpractice.

Leadership out of touch
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries sent a pro-Israel letter before the vote, but 103 Democrats ignored his guidance. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi's vote for the weapons cutoff was a weathervane, contrasting sharply with her 2018 pledge of unwavering cooperation with Israel.
Fear of antisemitism accusations fading
Fears of being slandered as antisemitic have long made automatic support for Israel seem safest. Now, as public attitudes shift, the intimidating power of Aipac and other pro-Israel groups has notably reduced. Worries about alienating big donors remain, but voters are bypassing leaders they see as lacking a moral compass.
