Cristian Volpato has allegedly tested positive for cocaine after being stopped while driving at nearly 50km/h over the speed limit in Sydney. The Socceroos forward was pulled over on Anzac Bridge about 1:10am Friday, according to NSW police. This incident has shocked Australian football fans and raised serious questions about the player's future.
The Incident: Speeding and Drug Test
Volpato, 22, was driving a BMW Coupe at 109km/h in a 60km/h zone when police stopped him. A roadside drug test allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine. A secondary oral fluid sample was taken for further analysis. The player received an infringement notice for speeding and his international driver's licence was suspended for six months, meaning he cannot drive in New South Wales.

Remarkably, this was his second stop on the same bridge that night. About two hours earlier, at 11:05pm Thursday, Volpato was allegedly driving more than 20km/h over the limit and issued a separate infringement notice. That test for alcohol returned a negative result.
Cristian Volpato's Career and Background
Born and raised in Sydney, Volpato played junior football at Sydney United 58, Sydney FC, and Western Sydney Wanderers before moving to Italy to join Serie A club Roma. After two seasons, he transferred to Sassuolo where he has scored seven goals in three seasons. He represented Italy at under-19 and under-20 levels but switched his international allegiance to Australia on the eve of the 2026 World Cup.
During the World Cup, Volpato made three appearances for the Socceroos, providing an attacking threat as the side progressed from the group stage as runners-up before losing to Egypt in the last 32. He is considered a key part of Australia's future.
Legal and Football Ramifications
As of now, Volpato has not been charged with a criminal offence. However, the alleged cocaine positive result could lead to further investigation. Under NSW law, driving with a detectable amount of an illicit drug can result in fines, licence suspension, and potential court action. Football Australia has been contacted for comment but has not yet issued a statement.
For the player's club, Sassuolo, and the Socceroos, this is a developing situation. If the secondary test confirms cocaine, Volpato could face disciplinary action from both his club and national federation.
