MATERIALS
- Round tip shovel
- Mason's Line
- Circular saw
- Hand saw
- Drill bits and extension
- Small hammer
- 2×4 to tamp
- Pressure-treated wood
- 1/2 inch rebar
- 12 inch tenons
- Landscape fabric
- Sand
- Cobblestones
Procedure
Step 1: Carve Risers
Perform steps with a lifting height equal to the height of the wood and a comfortable tread length.
Lay out the site with stakes and the mason's line.
Then dig holes in the hill, with the first hole 6 inches longer (front to back) than the actual tread.

Step 2: Design the brick formation
Place the brick tread on a flat surface and measure the dimensions of the design. Cut the wood to these measurements and fit them around the brick.
Square the corners with a framing square.

Step 3: assemble the wood
To assemble the timbers, drill 12-inch thorn pilot holes completely through the front face of the outside joists and approximately 2 inches into the side joists. Drive the spikes with a small mallet.
At the corners of the back beams, center a mark on the top face, approximately 4 inches from the ends. Mark the middle of the wood as well.
Drill a 1/2-inch hole through the wood. (You will drive rebar anchors through these holes when you set up the frames.)

Step 4: Set in place
When the first frame is properly leveled and tilted, cut 24-inch rods of 1/2-inch rebar and run them through the holes in the back joists to the ground.

Step 5: Place the second frame
Place the second box on the first.
The front wood of the upper frame sits on the back wood of the lower frame with their faces flush.
Drill three pilot holes all the way through the top wood and into the bottom half.
Then drive 12-inch nails into the holes. Tilt the second frame and anchor the back wood with rebar nailed into the holes you drilled in Step 3.

Step 6: Fill gravel and sand
Dig the hole further until it is deep enough for a layer of 3 inches of gravel, 2 inches of sand, and the thickness of your pavers.
Tamp the soil in eachhole with the end of a 2x4, then place the landscape fabric on the ground. Place the shovel in the gravel, trowel and tamp. Add the sand and tamp as well.

Step 7: sand level
Make a recessed ruler by nailing a 1x4 to a 2x4. The bottom edge of the 1x4 extends under the frame by the thickness of a paver. Adjust the level of sand and smooth it.

Step 8: Set Pavers
Set the pavers in the frame in the pattern you used to determine the dimensions of the frame. Lay them on the sand with a rubber mallet and align them as you would a brick patio surface on the sand.

Step 9: Fill the joints
Place a thin layer of construction sand on the brick and use a brush to sweep the sand into the joints. Mist the joints and brush in more sand, repeating the process until the joints are filled.
