Cool Wall Mounted Coat and Hat Rack, instead of building a regular one, I decided to make one with some hidden hooks. Made especially for hanging heavy coats.
At first, it looks like a piece of wall art in different suits. Certain poles rotate downward 22.5 degrees to hang a coat or hat.
Step 1: Cut the wood

All the wood was pieces of 1/2″ or 3/4″ plywood.
Know what your overall size will be. Mine was about 1′-4″ tall by 3′-0″ wide. Cut that from a sheet of 1/2″ plywood. This will be your back board that connects the entire set. Then cut all your sticks.
- From 3/4″ plywood: Cut a handful of strips to 1 1/4″
- Cut them to the look you want. Mine were (6) 6″, (10) 9″, (4) 10″ and (7) 12″.
- Place a 22.5 degree chamfer on the back ends of the 6″ rods, this will allow you to rotate around the room without hitting the back piece, as well as not swing too far down to function as a coat hanger.
- Make a mockup of your clubs on your board and adjust the heights to your liking. Remember to keep the bars 6″ in the center, so that the rod they rotate can connect to the neighboring bars.
- Trace your outline on the 1/2″ sheet and cut out your new shape.
- Now sand all your pieces. Start with 80 grit move to 100, and finish with 120.
Step 2: Drill the sticks

- Mock up your sticks again and mark the shorts/swivels where the chamfer ends, also mark the pieces on each side.
- Use a 1/4″ drill bit to drill all three sticks. And the next three, and the next one, etc.
- Take a 1/4″ rod and cut it to 3.75″ (1.25″ x3).
- Insert the rod into each section.
- Try twisting the sticks to see if they move easily. If not, drill the hole a little more or add a little wax.
Step 3: Paint!

- Before assembly, paint all your parts individually. It will be much easier to paint than when assembled.
- I mixed my own paint and went with an antique blue/gray look. But you can do whatever you want.
- My blue prescription was 49.5% white, 49.5% blue and 1% yellow.
- My gray prescription was 50% white and 50% black.
- I did a full coat of gray across each stick and the back.
- Once dry, I used a dry brush technique with the color blue, leaving certain parts gray.
Step 4: Assemble!

Run some wood glue on the front of the 1/2″ ply backing and the back of the 3/4″ dowels. Make sure NOT to glue where the short/swivel rods are.
Use a pneumatic staple gun and 1″ staples (or 1″ screws if you don't have access to pneumatics) and staple from the back through the 1/2" ply onto the 3/4" rod. Again, NOT the ones that spin.
Step 5: Hang

Then hang it on your wall and hang your coats and hats!
Just make sure your guests know which sticks swing down, so they don't try to pull too hard with the ones that are attached.
