Steps on how to make wooden grips for your keys

#1: The Idea

For this project, I found an old wooden plinth, I'm not sure of the exact type of wood, but it is quite smooth and most importantly has a very nice grain.

Of course, you can use any type of wood, maybe you can get an old case or an old object that will create a much better grip for your keys or other tools.

• In many cases, the wood looks old, ruined, ugly... But try to polish it and you will be surprised.
• Cut two rectangular pieces from the board a little larger than the head of the key.

#2: The bathroom

• This step is not essential, and it is actually pointless to create the wooden grips for my keys. But my first thought was to create a wooden cover around the head of the key.
• Then I decided to scratch the wood until the metal key appears around the outline.
• Leaving the wood in the water for a few hours will make it very soft and you will be able to push the two boards against each other until they swallow the entire head of the key.

#3: The clamp

• In the first image of this step, you see how the large bench could push the boards onto the key. Leave it closed for many hours, until the wood is dry.
• Then you can apply the glue and let it dry.
• If the arms of the scope are too narrow to hold all the wooden pieces you need to equalize the pressure across the entire surface with the help of two metal plates.
• The second image shows the circumstances in which you have already decided to keep the metal outline around the key head.
• In this case, the pressure to glue the pieces is not very high, and you can use a small vise or a clamp, and instead of metal plates, two wooden blocks are good.
• Use a strong metal glue, remember to carefully clean and degrease the surfaces before applying glue to them.

You will probably want to make one or two small holes in the wood plates before gluing them, this way you can remember the exact position of the key hole, as seen in the third photo.

#4: Sandpaper

• When the two shells are fixed, you can start cutting them and scratching them on a rough sand paper, until you have a rough shape.
• Then change the roughness of the sandpaper two or more times, to obtain a smooth surface.
• Make the hole with a drill, preferably a drill press.
• You can smooth the edge of the holes with a tapered drill bit, using the same sandpaper.

#5: The approximate outline

• Perform the same process with the other keys.
• Scratch the edge until you reach the metal of the key.
• This metal is very soft, probably brass, so you can shape it and change the shape of the key.
• Do it with the roughest sandpaper, and then change the roughness step by step, you can polish it with the same wood at the end of the process.

#6: The perfect shape

• You can see how much you can play with the shapes.
• Each key will have a different grip, and you can discern them with a single touch.

#7: Oil

When you are satisfied with the shapes, the holes, the roughness of the key, you can pour it in oil so that the wood keeps the dark color and stands out.

#8: Wax

It is also good to polish it with wax. The more you rub, the more wood will become shiny and amazing!
