TOOLS
- rake
- level
- tape measure
- hammer
- grope
- shovel
- string level
MATERIALS
- gravel
- ready-mixed cement
- granite slab steps
Step 1: Establish wall face

Establish the face of the retaining wall by hammering a piece of rebar into the ground at both ends. Tie a piece of nylon rope between the two rebar, using a line level to make sure the line is level.
Step 2: Determine the number of steps

An average step is approximately 6 inches in height. Use a tape measure to determine the distance from the top point of the entire wall to the floor.
In this project, that distance is 18 inches, which means there will be three steps of slab.
Step 3: Mark and dig

Mark and dig the footing for the first step to a depth of 6 inches. Prepare the ready-mix concrete according to the manufacturer's instructions. Pour the concrete into the excavated hole and smooth it with the back of a metal rake.
Continue pouring and troweling until the concrete reaches a height just below grade.
Step 4: Place the first step

Place the first granite step on the footer so that the front is flush with the face of the wall.
The top of the step should be tilted slightly so that water can escape. Check the level from side to side (Image 1).
Step 5: Complete the steps

Dig the footer for the second step directly behind the first step. Pour the concrete into the footer hole and smooth it with an iron rake.
Set the front of the second step to the back edge of the first step (Image 1). Repeat this process until all steps are established.
To cut granite, first mark a straight, square line across the width of the stone. Using a hammer gun, drill 3-inch-deep holes every 4 inches along the cut line. Insert two feathers and a wedge into each hole.
Hit the wedges with a stone hammer until the stone bends (Image 2).
Step 6: Prepare the Wall Footer

Dig to a depth of 6 inches along the entire base of the stone retaining wall, using the rope marker as a guide. For dry stack walls, the base should be as wide as the wall is tall.
For this 18-inch tall wall, the base must be at least 18 inches wide. Use a hand or energy manipulator to level the base.
Add 3 inches of gravel and compact with hand or power tamper.
Step 7: Build a dry stack wall

Begin building the wall by placing cornerstones (those with a 90-degree corner) at each end of the wall and on both sides of the granite steps.
Begin placing face stones (those with a flat face) between the corner stones.
Every three to four feet, place a mooring stone (flat, long, and heavy) to provide additional stability. Continue placing corner and face stones to build the wall until you reach the desired height. Regularly check that the wall is plumb.
For the final course, use capping stones (smooth top, flat face)
Step 8: Complete project

While building the wall, throw all the unwanted stone debris behind the wall. When the wall is complete, fill behind it with gravel to the level of the cap stones. Cover this gravel with stone or colored mulch to match the desired landscape appearance.
