Installing a Bed/Couch in a Motorhome, I built a simple DIY bed in a Dodge ProMaster pickup truck, which a friend is converting into an outdoor camping van.
Step 1: Gather Construction Materials
- Nails
- Glue stick
- (2) 4'x8' sheets of 1/2 plywood
- (1) 2″x8″x16′ Yellow Pine Board
- (7) 2″x2″x10′ boards
- 2″ screws
- Wood glue
- 12″x24″ HDPE(high-density polyethylene) sheet
- Mattress
- Pulleys
- Rope
- 30″ piano hinges
- Laser cutter
- FarOutRide Bike Racks
Step 2: Building the supports

The first thing built for the bed were the rails that support the bed platform. I made these 8 foot long 2x8s, and the first step was to cut the board about in half on the table saw.

I prefer to do this instead of buying 2x4s, since the 2x8s in my area are made of yellow pine, which is much stronger than the white wood that 2x4s are made of. That said, if you don't have a table saw, you could use 2x4s here.

After cutting the boards to width, I cut them to their final length on the miter saw. We made the rails 80″ long, which is long enough to support the bed platform without the rails extending into the main part of the truck cab.

Step 3: Add HDPE

To help reduce wear on the rails and also help the platform slide when converting from bed mode to couch mode, I decided to line the top edge of the rails with HDPE, the same plastic they use in cheap cutting boards. These things are incredibly soft and I bought this 12″x24″ sheet on Amazon.

First, I cut the sheet into 1 ½” wide strips, to match the width of the rails. The HDPE cut very well on the table saw without melting or splintering.

Next, I began installing the strips to the top of the rails using 1″ countersunk screws. It is important that the screw heads are well below the surface of the HDPE so that the base deck can slide without snagging.

I continued installing strips until both rails were covered, and then I was able to install the rails on the van.

Step 4: Installing the rails

Before doing so, we needed to determine the exact height we wanted for the rails. The area under the bed is planned to be used for bike storage, and the bikes will be on sliding trays for easy loading and unloading. So we had to make sure the highest point on the bike, the seat in this case, cleared the underside of the bed platform.

After figuring out this measurement, I was able to place the mounted rails on the walls. Before I started, I had him add furring strips along the inside of the walls, which are attached directly to the metal of the van. These furring strips provide a perfect location for attaching load-bearing elements such as bed rails.
To install the rails, I first measured from the floor and marked a line. It's a little weird working on a truck like this, because you can't check the level since the ground you're parked on is almost never level. Instead, you should reference other points on the van.
After marking the lines, I installed the rails with these huge 2 ¼” structural screws and added two screws into each slat. These rails are definitely not going anywhere once all the screws are added!
Step 5: Cross Support and Final Stops

To help support the bed platform and prevent it from sagging in the middle, we added a cross support rail that uses more of the yellow pine.
I drilled some pocket holes in each end of the rail and then attached the cross brace to the rails, making sure it is behind the back of the seat on the bike trays.
The last piece to add to the rails were some stops at the front of the rails, to prevent the bed platform from sliding when going from sofa mode to bed mode.
Step 6: Bed Platform

Speaking of the bed platform, I might get to work on that next. The platform is a simple 2x2 frame covered with ½” plywood.
If I were to build this again, I would probably use 2x4s instead of 2x2s here, just for a little more rigidity, but 2x2s are pretty strong and I already had a bunch on hand.
After cutting the 2x2 to size, I marked the space between the 2x2s on the longer pieces and then attached them with 2″ screws through each joint.
These are basically the same construction as any post wall, with the spacing between the posts a little more compact.
Since the platform bed needed a hinge in the center, I had to create two individual frame sections.
Step 7: Bed Platform

Once they were done, I ripped the plywood ½” wide to match the frames on the table saw. I had the home center cut the panels to size, which made things much easier for me. If you don't have a table saw, you can have the home center make both cuts for you.
With the panels cut to their final size, I could attach them to the frames using wood glue and brad with 1″ brads using my brad nailer.
After the glue dried, I roughed up the edges with a sander, just to make them a little less sharp, and then we could move the pallets to the truck. We immediately noticed some flex in the back panel, which we repaired by adding another cross support rail to the back of the rails.
To join the two panels together, I used two 30″ long piano hinges. I used 1″ screws to attach the hinges, instead of the screws included with the hinges, so the screws went through the plywood and into the frame below.
After installing the hinges, we went to test the platform and noticed that we had a problem...
The bed platform contacted the walls of the truck when we went to lift it. This was because the walls of the vans curved significantly towards the roof of the van.
Step 8: Reducing the size of the sofa

A few days later, I went back to work on the deck, first removing the screws from the area I would be cutting so I wouldn't hit them with the saw blade. I marked at 4 ½” on each corner, which would give enough room for the platform to go all the way up, and then drew a line to connect that measurement to the other corner of the panel.
I used my saw to cut this section, but a circular saw and ruler would work just as well.
Next, I had to cut some pieces of 2x2 to replace the bolts that were cut, and I did it on the miter saw. We ended up with an angle of about 6 degrees, which I cut on one end of the 2x2 and then marked the length on the other end, referencing the actual frame.
After cutting the 2x2 to fit, I attached it with more glue and nails, also making sure to replace the 2″ screws on each end.
Step 9: Rope and pulley system

After test fitting and making sure the panel fit, which it did, I went ahead and drilled a hole through the back corner of the panel for some rope to run through. This rope is part of the pulley system used to convert the bed into sofa mode.
Speaking of which, next we could have the pulleys installed on the wall of the van. The system uses two pulleys, each rated at 420 lbs., and the pulleys are attached to the furring strips with 1 ¼” screws. With the pulleys installed, we were able to test the system and it worked perfectly.
After verifying that the system was working, I added some upright supports, which support the back of the platform when it is in sofa mode.
I used offcuts taken from the rails for this, and we will eventually add HDPE to these in the future to help reduce wear.
Also, as you may have noticed, we had to move the pulley back to make room for the vertical support, but this did not change the functionality of the pulley system at all.
I disconnected a quick handle to tie the other end of the rope, to give something to pull when converting the bed, and added it to the rope outside the chamber.
Step 10: Sofa and bed mode

Next, I needed to add some kind of locking functionality to prevent the platform from moving when in any mode. To do this, I added a barrel bolt to each end of the front deck.
I drilled a set of holes for the barrel bolt in the position where the platform would be when in bed mode, and then drilled another set of holes to lock the platform in place when in couch mode.
After setting up the barrel bolts, we were finally able to try couch mode, and it turned out perfectly. The angle is perfect for relaxing and hanging out, it's very easy to get on the platform.
Then we could lower the platform to bed mode and get the mattress added. We found a cheap 6″ thick foam mattress and it was thick enough to be comfortable without sacrificing headroom.
Once the mattress was added, we noticed that the mattress wanted to slide off the platform when going from bed mode to couch mode, so I added a small clamp to the front of the rail to prevent this from happening.
Step 11: Final Touches

The last small piece to add was this little molding, which had to wait until the bed rails were attached, which I installed using hot glue.
Hot glue is the perfect truck adhesive as it is strong enough to hold but can be easily removed if things need to be changed.
