Support for Laptop and Headphones. The support is made of mahogany wood recovered from other projects. The base has an LED light that stays on when plugged in. Along the back, there is a slot for connecting a laptop or tablet. On the neck of the stand, there is an LED lamp for the necessary light.
Even though the lamp faces back, it is a great way to keep clutter off your desk. Simply turn the light source towards the direction you need light. The light is controlled via the rocker switch on the back.
Parts used in the project:
- Mahogany wood
- RGB LED
- White LED
- Light switch
- Acrylic PlexiGlass
- Wood finish
- Polyurethane
- LED cover
- DC Jack (Input)
Step 1: Construction of the support

Mahogany wood pieces, approximately 2.5 inches thick.
I started by drawing the neck part of the support. Then, cut off the unwanted part. Position the miter saw to make a 15-degree cut on both ends. Take one of the cut ends, then trace the head of the bracket on that part. Then divide it in two. Hold and glue the two parts to the head, one on each side.
Forming the head:
Once the glue has set, take a round object that traces an arc. Then delete the unwanted section.
Step 2: Make the base

The base was also cut at a 15 degree angle along the front. I centered the neck at the base and then outlined the shape. Next, cut out this section, be sure to cut within the lines (it will be a tight fit). Next, take a chisel to clean up the opening. I need the base to be thick so that I can have space to store the component and also enough support to hold the laptop.
Step 3: Shaping the neck

I want to keep this with the modern look and clean lines. To make the headphones sit properly, I shaved the corners in the center of the head.
I also wanted to add something different to the stand (more like an extra). So adding a lamp seems like a good option. It's not something I would use all the time, but if I needed it, it's there. I just had an LED cover piece that I traced onto the neck part. I then chiselled this section so the cover sits flush. The next thing I did was drill a hole from the bottom of the bracket to the LED lamp section. To avoid any mistakes, I drilled both ends and foundin the middle. The goal is to be able to pass the cables through the neck.
Step 4: Add the Plexiglass

Now, we're getting into the fun part. I used a 1/4 inch sheet of plexiglass and then traced the base onto it. On the band saw, I made the fence the same thickness as the plexiglass.
Tearing the bottom
I made two passes in the mountains. I held the first tear and then proceeded to make a second tear. Discard the second pass, the Plexiglass will replace it.
Cut the Plexiglass down to match the base and then make a hole in the center (3 to 5 inch hole).
Next, transfer the hole in the base and offset it. Next, fasten the three pieces (the stand and the bottom). Place the Plexiglass between the bottom and the base. Drill a hole for the switch and DC jack.
Screw the bottom part
After doing all the fine tuning, clamp everything together once more. Then pre-drill the holes and countersink the holes so the screw heads are flush.
Step 5: Adding Your Finish

Use sawdust with wood glue mixed to fill any gaps. Next, sand the entire support. Use the finish enough before applying polyurethane.
Step 6: Add the LED

If you want a color changing LED, you will need to use a strip with an LED driver. I have committed to one of the three available colors “blue”. You can choose from RED, GREEN, BLUE or you can be creative and mix the color. Simply connect the positive leg to 12v on the strip and the negative leg to blue.
The LED for the lamp is even simpler, there is only positive and negative. After extending the cables, install the strip into the slot. Then install the cover. I will also solder leads into the DC jack and power switch.
Step 7: Wiring

This may seem complicated, but it is not. Let's see if I can clarify.
- The LED strips (both) and the DC socket will be connected with a positive and a negative.
(1) Place all components in their locations. Take the ground (leg) of the following.
- The RGB LED (choose the color)
- White light negative led strip
- Negative in DC Jack
Note: Turn them all together.
(2) Take the positive as follows
- The RGB LED (12v)
- Positive DC socket
- A leg of the light switch.
Note: Turn them all together.
(3) Connect the following
- The positive white light strip
- A leg of the light switch.
Note:Turn them all together.
Once everything is connected, apply some solder to secure it in place. The splice cover with shrink tube or any type of wiring connector.
Step 8: Attach the bottom

All that's left to do is attach the bottom, attach some rubber bumpers, and plug it in. Greetings and thanks for coming!
