Making a vertically elevated garden bed will allow you to maintain order in your plants in a simple and practical way.
We have been looking for a way to make our own garden vegetables without using a lot of space, unlike conventional raised garden beds.
The final idea we came up with using old wine boxes stacked on top of each other, also gave us the benefit of placing a moving platform under construction.
This way we can easily move it away, whenever we need a little more space on our terrace.
In this article, I'm going to explain all the steps and materials you need to make your own mobile raised vertical garden bed to enjoy all the organic vegetables you love.
Supplies:
- 5 old wine boxes.
- Burlap (approx. one roll of 15cm x 10m to 20m, depends on the size of your cases)
- 1 Wooden board
- 4 transport wheels
- 1-2 wooden slats
- Flower soil and compost for layering soil for your plant.
- Herbs and vegetables
Tools:
- Silicone gun
- Nails
- Screwdriver
- Sierra
- Wood glue
Steps to make a vertical raised garden bed:

Step 1: Building the mobile base platform

Let's start by building our mobile base, where our raised vertical garden bed construction is placed.
Grab your wooden board and screw the four transport wheels into the corners of the board.
Turn it on and make sure you activate the breaks ;)
Step 2: Design of the vertical construction of the raised garden bed

Now take your old wine boxes and put them between them.
You can try different layout designs with more or fewer layers, but you should choose a layout that is already quite stable on its own.
TIP: Take a photo of your final design to remember the exact positions and rotations of the cases
Step 3: Sealing gaps in the cases

Take each box and glue the burlap to it whenever there is a gap. This way the floor stays inside your cases.
We did the double layer of burlap, which worked well. =)
Step 4: Stabilization of your construction

Exactly performing this step depends on your specific design cases
In our case, we built a wooden frame to support the back of the box on the second layer and supported the third layer with a wooden clamp, the edges of which were cut at a 45 degree angle.
We used some screws and wood glue to glue them together.
In each case, we also placed braces under those corners, which extended to other cases, which gave a nice increase in overall stability.
The top case stands alone above the case below.
Step 5: Soil Layers

If you search the Internet for specific soil layers that are best used for raised garden beds, you can find many different approaches.
We decided on a simple two-layer approach becausethe low height of the box.
The first layer is made up of old leaves and branches for a height of around 10 cm. The second layer consists of flower soil for vegetables.
Push down a little to compress the first layer inside the cases.
You should leave the top 10cm of the cases blank to prevent the soil from being washed away during rain or watering your herbs and vegetables.
Now plant all your favorite herbs and vegetables and enjoy your new mobile vertical garden bed!
