Athena wordt ook Pallas Athena genoemd, de godin van de wijsheid in de oude Griekse mythologie, en een van de twaalf goden van de Olympus. Ze is ook de godin van kunst en spinnenambacht. Het gebedslied noemde haar "de stichter van de kunst." Ze leert mensen textiel, tuinieren, pottenbakken, veeteelt en andere vaardigheden, schilderen, beeldhouwen, muziek en andere kunsten. Ze is ook de godin van militaire strategie. De beschermheilige van navigatie, landbouw en medische zorg. Godin van rechtspraak en orde.
Er zijn verslagen van Athena tijdens de verering van de oude Kretenzische godin. Myceense leisteen noemde haar "vrouwelijke heerser". Vogels en slangen zijn de heilige dingen van Athena. Op de Akropolis van Athene staat nog steeds een van de overgebleven oude Griekse gebouwen, het Parthenon, dat de godin Athena vereert.
