Taghazout is located in the Souss-Massa-Drââ region in the Kingdom of Morocco. Far away from the tourist centers of Marrakesh, Casablanca and Essaouira, the small village is still an insider tip. At least among those who have little to do with surfing, because Taghazout is considered a surfing paradise in the scene. A vacation is worth it even if you don't plan on venturing out on a board. Above all, Taghazout is a place to slow down and relax. Sunnytrips introduces the insider tip Taghazout and shows how you can plan a stay here.
The fishing village of Taghazout lies in a bay about 20 kilometers from Agadir, as if pictured. The route there leads along the coast, the last few meters the car rumbles down a slope and reveals a view of the sea. The journey ends on the main street of the village, which at first glance seems quite inconspicuous. Both sides of the street are lined with shops and restaurants. The heart of Taghazout, however, is located a little below the street. Because there are numerous narrow streets leading down to the sea. Many of the houses have various accommodations. From your own apartments to surf camps and hostels, everything is available here. A special highlight is the last street at the bottom of the village because it borders directly on the beach and the sea. Here there is one restaurant after another and it is the place where the essence of the village is revealed.

The arrival
The fishing village of Taghazout
Taghazout itself makes it seem as if time stood still sometime a few decades ago. The narrow streets are peppered with souvenir shops and goods are offered for sale in the small market square. Early in the morning, fishermen take their boats out to sea, and during the day the boats park on the edge of the two hundred meter long sandy beach. There is an elevated path directly on the shore, from which the terraces of the adjacent restaurants and cafés lead off. My tip: The best address for a dinner with a sea view is the Windy Bay Restaurant. Live music is also played here every Thursday at sunset.

Art and culture in Taghazout
There is always something going on here, but the atmosphere is still exceptionally calm and relaxed. Young and old sit in the sun with a coffee, let their gaze wander over the sea, read a book or write in a notebook. Taghazout is no longer an insider tip among surfing fans, as the bay on the Atlantic promises the perfect waves. Surfing has a long tradition in Taghazout and so many of the young people have set up their own surfing schools. You often meet people who take photos or are interested in fashion, as the picturesque place is also very popular with art enthusiasts. My tip: The clothing store Anouri Original is located on the street directly by the sea. Mohamed Youss sells clothes that he designs himself. The hand-sewn pieces are made from recycled materials, such as jute sacks and carpets. And the result is impressive!

The choice of accommodation
Mass tourism seems to be far away in Taghazout; you won't find hotel chains or luxury hotels here. Instead, the small houses right on the shore can be rented for little money. The well-known online portals are ideal for this. There you can find apartments that can be rented outright, small hostels, surf camps or even individual rooms, which are often located in the private homes of local people. With a bit of luck, the rooms even have their own terrace and sea view. When booking, I recommend looking for accommodation near the beach. My tip: The Bed & Breakfast Laverie Du Soleil is run by a Moroccan family. Prices vary depending on comfort, if possible I recommend choosing one of the rooms with a private terrace.

Make conscious decisions
It is also important to ensure that local people benefit from tourism. Because of surf tourism, some people from abroad have settled in Taghazout. Many of them give yoga courses or surfing lessons - often without work permits or taxes. Of course, this is doing enormous damage to Morocco and its people. To counteract this, you can do your part to support the local population by making conscious decisions. My tip: Have breakfast right by the sea! You are particularly close to the water on the terrace of the Almadraba Restaurant.

Activities in Taghazout
A majority of people come to Taghazout for two reasons: to enjoy and to surf. There is hardly any place where you can pursue both activities as well as in Taghazout. There are so many cafes and restaurants here that you can really try them out during your vacation. It's the perfect place for a good book and an escape from everyday stress. Above all, you should try the Moroccan dish Tajine and the mint tea, which is called Atay here. In addition, almond butter is a real specialty in Morocco and the avocado shake tastes as good in hardly any place as it does here. My tip: Many of the shops do not accept card payments. Since there is always a hefty fee charged at the village's ATMs, it is best to take enough cash with you from Germany. In Agadir, this can then be changed from euros to dirhams in exchange offices.

Horse riding and quad biking on the beach
Anyone looking for an alternative to widespread surfing will find it in Taghazout. In addition to the usual beach activities, you can also go horseback riding or quad biking here. There are various providers locally, for a quad tour I recommend the neighboring village of Tamraght. In general, it is always worth asking the local employees for addresses and contacts. In Taghazout Bay, Othman offers guided rides on one of his horses. He calls himself “Arda Horse” on social media, where meetings can be arranged in advance. When on holiday in Taghazout, you should definitely visit the Souk el Had in Agadir. The traditional market takes place on all days except Mondays. My tip: If you want a change of scenery, you could plan a slightly longer trip to Marrakech. I recommend spending about two nights there; buses run to the metropolis from Agadir several times a day. The tickets cost around ten euros.

The arrival
The flight from Germany to Agadir takes around three to four hours. From the airport you can then take a taxi to Taghazout. If you want to save money, you can take a taxi to the “Batoir”. Shared taxis are waiting there and go to a wide variety of towns. The travel costs are divided among several passengers. Whenever the car is full, the journey starts. My tip: It's worth buying an eSIM for your holiday in Morocco. Providers can be found online, where they can be easily ordered and activated immediately.
