One of the most beautiful cities in Sicily is undoubtedly Taormina. With a view of Mount Etna, there are ancient theaters of the Greeks and Romans, a magnificent old town accessible by cable car and nearby beautiful bays and beaches for a beach holiday to discover. But as much beauty as in so many places around the world also has its dark side.
The small town of Taormina in Sicily is not only considered one of the most beautiful cities in Sicily, but in all of Italy. Around 11,000 residents live here near the volcano Etna on the east coast of the largest island in the Mediterranean. There is evidence that the Siculians settled here around 2,700 years ago, before the Greeks made the terraces of Monte Tauro their city. Later, the Arabs completely devastated the town, and today the old town is essentially characterized by medieval squares and palazzi. And of course the fantastic views of Mount Etna and the Mediterranean with the Isola Bella in front of it.

Attraction point for tourists
Of course, so much beauty did not remain undiscovered for long. Germany's famous poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe traveled to Taormina in 1787 and dedicated a few pages to the town in his famous report “Italian Journey”. At the end of the 19th century, tourism experienced its first heyday. Emperor Wilhelm II and Austria's Empress Sissi vacationed on Etna, as did Oscar Wilde and Richard Strauss. In the 1950s, Elizabeth Taylor and Cary Grant also sunbathed in Taormina.
Just don't come during high season!
"When I visited Taormina a few years ago, there were neither school holidays nor a weekend. It was a completely normal weekday in the low season in May. And yet holidaymakers were milling through the main street of the old town with its many shops and cafés, there was no talk of a relaxed stroll. I don't regret the visit at all. However, I would recommend that everyone come in cooler months such as March/April or October/November, as then the chances are good the city is not quite as crowded as usual.
My tip: Run from Taormina to the village of Castelmola, three kilometers away, on the summit of Monte Tauro. From up there you have an even more magnificent view over the east coast of the island and, on clear days, all the way across to the mainland. In the Bar Turrisi on the Piazza Duomo you can fortify yourself with homemade almond wine – and notice at second glance that almost all the objects in the iconic bar are in the shape of a penis – from the backs of chairs and candlesticks to lamps, taps and door handles.”
The Roman Theater
In the second century BC, the Romans in Taormina converted a theater originally built by the Greeks to accommodate up to 10,000 spectators. A similar theater can also be found in Arles in Provence. Almost exclusively gladiator spectacles took place in the 120 meter long and 50 meter wide arena. Today, tourists can visit the theater as well as the neighboring Antiquarium, a museum worth seeing with valuable archaeological finds.

Fantastic view of Isola Bella
The beautiful view over the Gulf of Giardini-Naxos and the offshore Isola Bella with its picture-perfect beaches is one of Taormina's attractions, alongside the beautiful old town with magnificent medieval buildings such as the Palazzo Corvaja, the Palazzo Duca di Santo Stefano, the Palazzo Ciampoli, the Corso Umberto with its two city gates and the Giardino Pubblico.
A cable car ride to Mazzarò
A highlight of every visit to Taormina is the cable car ride from the traffic-calmed old town to the district of Mazzarò with a wonderful view of Castelmola and the Bay of Letojanni. Here you can also go to Taormina's beaches on Isola Bella. Other sights include the Castello Sarazeno from the 16th century, the Gardini Naxos archaeological site and the rocky gorge of the Alcantara river, which provides cooling with its crystal-clear cold water, especially in the hot summer months.
