And it is precisely this phenomenon that made the cave system, which consists of more than 300 of the over 30 million year old grottos, a tourist magnet in the last century.

According to the attraction's official website, Maori Chief Tane Tinorau discovered the Waitomo Caves in 1887. Together with an English surveyor, he floated through the underground network on a raft on the Waitomo River and also explored parts of it on foot. Just two years later, the man opened the caves to paying guests for the first time. It was such a resounding success that the government took over his business in 1906.
