Your wedding should be all about you and your partner. In no way should anyone be allowed to take the spotlight away from the bride and the groom. Second of all, I believe whoever’s wedding it is has all the right to decide who gets to attend it and who doesn’t. If I don’t dislike a person, I will never invite him/her to my wedding. But what if that person I hate is my sister’s boyfriend? The association of the boyfriend with my sister may result in my sister also not attending my wedding. In that case, I would think twice.
That is exactly what happened in today’s story shared by Reddit user Competitive_Carob742. He shared that he disliked his sister’s boyfriend for a lot of reasons. And for all those reasons, he decided not to invite him to the wedding. When the sister got to know about this, she began reducing her interest in the wedding as well. OP shared that the boyfriend’s cultural values were opposite to those of his family, and not many family members knew about him so inviting him to the wedding would have basically been a first encounter for many of them. OP feared that would take all the spotlight away from him and his bride onto his sister and her boyfriend.

1. Let’s find out what made OP take this decision and how his sister reacted to this news.
2. OP told his sister, who was also the maid of honor, that her boyfriend wouldn’t be allowed at his wedding.
3. After getting the news the sister began reducing her level of interest in the wedding. The sister called OP an AH because everyone else would be bringing their partners and she would be the only one coming alone.
4. OP’s sister has been together with her boyfriend for just 8 months but it seems that the two will marry each other.
5. The two had basically started an affair with OP as the sister was in a decade-long relationship and her boyfriend was married to someone at that time.
6. OP doesn’t like his sister’s boyfriend for many reasons. One is that he is still a married man.
7. Secondly, a serious conversation with him still didn’t make his intent clear to OP about his sister.

8. Thirdly, his norms and values were the exact opposite compared to his girlfriend’s.
9. Okay, after reading this example I am convinced the boyfriend is not a good guy.

Ultimately it is OP’s wedding and he has full right to decide who must attend it and who must not. All those who get the invitation card will show up and the ones not getting one, should respect OP’s choice. Ideally, that is how events and invites go. If he doesn’t like his sister’s boyfriend, he is free to not invite him. However, this decision isn’t as straightforward as it sounds. For OP, it is a choice between inviting her sister’s boyfriend or not inviting him. However, for his sister, it will then become a choice between choosing her boyfriend or her brother. A far tougher decision to make as compared to the one in OP’s hands.
By not inviting the boyfriend, his sister may choose not the attend the wedding entirely. We have already read she has reduced her input in the wedding preparations already.

10. OP also noticed ever since she got into a relationship with her boyfriend, she gave less and less value to her own happiness and conformed to whatever he would like.
11. Not many people in the family knew about this new boyfriend so OP didn’t want his wedding to be centered around all that either.

12. OP’s mother is of the thought he should invite the boyfriend. The matter was taken to the courts of the AITA community.
13. The father doesn’t want the boyfriend to be there either because of the whole cultural aspect. It is all about the respect for him.

14. She also had plans to reveal her relationship with the new boyfriend at OP’s wedding which would mean taking all the spotlight away from him and his bride.
