The US Iran strikes have escalated dramatically, with the US military launching a seventh consecutive night of strikes on Iran as the conflict over the Strait of Hormuz intensifies. These operations aim to degrade Iranian military capabilities, targeting key infrastructure and military assets across southern Iran.
US Military Operations and Iranian Response
US Central Command announced the strikes began at 7pm GMT on Friday, focusing on degrading Iranian military capabilities. Iranian media reported explosions in cities including Sirik, Ahvaz, and Yazd. In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed two oil tankers hit mines in Hormuz and exploded, a claim the US military denied as false.

IRGC Retaliatory Attacks
On Saturday, the IRGC said it targeted a site where US combat aircraft were gathered at Sheikh Isa air base and an intelligence datacenter in Bahrain known as Batelco. The IRGC also reportedly struck a US naval fuel-support pier at al-Ahmadi port and a US signals and communications center in Kuwait. Kuwait temporarily suspended operations at its international airport due to Iranian missile and drone attacks.
Impact on Civilian Infrastructure
US airstrikes hit bridges in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province, killing at least seven people, according to Iranian state TV. These bridges were a key transit point for Bandar Abbas, Iran’s main port. Further strikes brought down a tower in Chabahar port on the Gulf of Oman, which the US military claimed the IRGC used to facilitate attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The US also targeted key electrical infrastructure and Iranshahr airport.
Energy Grid Strain
Iran’s energy ministry told citizens to reduce electricity and air conditioning use after the power grid came under strain due to US strikes on energy facilities. The ministry said areas in the south were experiencing “extreme heat and attacks on power infrastructure” as temperatures soared. Human rights experts have warned that strikes on civilian infrastructure not used for military purposes could constitute a war crime.

|---|---|---|
| Military bases | Degraded Iranian capabilities | Targeted US aircraft at Sheikh Isa |
| Infrastructure | Bridges, power grid, port tower | Fuel pier, communications center |
