WSL Talking Points: Chelsea Punish Arsenal and Putellas Finds Rhythm 2026

WSL talking points this week highlight Chelsea's clinical victory over Arsenal and Alexia Putellas finding her rhythm at London City Lionesses. The match at Stamford Bridge exposed Arsenal's ongoing struggle with finishing, while Putellas showed signs of adapting to her new team.

Chelsea Punish Arsenal's Wastefulness

In a dominant display, Arsenal controlled large portions of the game but failed to convert their chances. They registered 18 shots, with only two on target, while Chelsea made the most of their opportunities, scoring through Alyssa Thompson just before half-time. The 1-0 defeat leaves Arsenal with mounting concerns about their ruthlessness in front of goal.

Arsenal's Finishing Woes Continue

Arsenal's inability to take their chances has been a recurring theme this season. Despite applying pressure and creating numerous opportunities, they often fail to test the goalkeeper. Head coach Renée Slegers acknowledged the issue but remains hopeful: "I wanted to keep it away from the players because they can score goals and they can finish and they will get the rewards for their work." However, with the season progressing, solutions are needed urgently.

Alexia Putellas Finds Her Rhythm

Alexia Putellas, the two-time Ballon d'Or winner, has taken time to settle at London City Lionesses since her summer move. In the 2-0 win against Brighton, she scored a goal that seemed to lift a weight off her shoulders. The Spaniard's celebration reflected relief as much as joy, and her performance suggests she is finding her form in the WSL.

Putellas's Impact on London City Lionesses

Putellas's arrival brought high expectations, and her recent goal could be the catalyst for a strong run. Her experience and skill are invaluable, and as she adapts to the league, her influence on the team is likely to grow. London City Lionesses will hope she can maintain this rhythm and drive them up the table.
