Parsifal Review: Wagner's Grail Quest Gets Goth Makeover

Parsifal review: Wagner's final opera receives a bold, goth-infused staging at Bayreuth, where blood, lust, and symbolic imagery dominate the Grail quest. This revival of Jay Scheib's 2023 production pushes the boundaries of traditional opera, earning both boos and applause.

Parsifal at Bayreuth: A Heavily Symbolic Work

Even by Wagner's standards, Parsifal is a heavily symbolic work, and nowhere more than at Bayreuth. It was the only work composed specifically for this theatre's acoustic, and for decades, Wagner's family prevented performances elsewhere. This production amplifies the symbolism with a large blue crystal grail and a light show, while Kundry, the femme fatale, gets an avatar who seduces the usually unimpeachable Gurnemanz as the curtain rises.

Violence and Complicated Morality

Violence is ubiquitous in this staging. There is no "good" here, just shades of "complicated." The result is both bleak and emotionally monochrome. The evil sorcerer Klingsor is a dodgy uncle in pink velvet, dry-humping the stolen spear; his flower maidens occupy a luridly decorated concrete dungeon where corpses lie on bloody mattresses.

Musical Performances: Goth Energy and Vocal Power

Musically, there was more variety. Miina-Liisa Värelä's Kundry exuded goth energy, her low notes chilling, her melodies all liquid ferocity. Andreas Schager's Parsifal tended towards fragmentary notes and syllables when not singing at full pelt. Georg Zeppenfeld was an appealing Gurnemanz, his bass-baritone glowing and supple, while Vitalij Kowaljow delivered a vigorously stentorian Titurel.

Standout Vocalists in Key Roles

Jordan Shanahan (Klingsor) used his bass like a weapon, hard-edged and sleek. As Amfortas, Michael Volle roared and raged but was most compelling in his painfully lyrical outbursts in Act 3. The chorus was well blended, providing a solid foundation for the soloists.

Production Design: From Grail to Goth

The production's design elements are striking. The grail becomes a glowing crystal, and the filming continues as Amfortas's wound is unwrapped, poked, and slowly sewn up, with the nauseating results dominating Act 1 from a stage-wide screen. Parsifal is stripped down to what look like a tween's pyjamas, hearts galore, adding to the unsettling atmosphere.

Comparison: Traditional vs. Modern Staging

Aspect Traditional Parsifal Jay Scheib's Production
Grail Representation Chalice or cup Large blue crystal with light show
Kundry's Role Seductive woman Avatar and goth energy
Violence Level Implied Graphic and pervasive
Moral Tone Redemption focused Bleak, complicated

Key Takeaways from This Parsifal Review

  • Musical performances shine, particularly Värelä's Kundry and Volle's Amfortas.
  • The staging challenges traditional interpretations, provoking mixed reactions from the audience.
  • Bayreuth's unique acoustic remains central to the experience.
