Heatwaves are killing people in Britain, with recent data from Imperial College London revealing that May and June heatwaves killed about 2,700 people in England and Wales. This stark reminder shows how climate change is measured not just in degrees but in lost lives, demanding immediate action to protect vulnerable populations.
Extreme Heat and Mental Health Crisis
Extreme heat doesn't just cause physical harm; it also severely impacts mental health. Throughout the northern hemisphere, people have experienced difficulty sleeping, increased irritability, and reduced concentration during heatwaves. Research links higher temperatures to a surge in negative emotions and an elevated risk of suicide.

Hospital admissions for mental health conditions spike during extreme heat events, and mortality rates rise among those with existing mental health issues. Dr Alessandro Massazza from United for Global Mental Health emphasizes that climate action is also action for mental health.
Practical Solutions to Combat Heatwave Deaths
While the media offers advice for reducing indoor heat, these measures alone are often insufficient. The South Australia heat health warning system provides a model, including daily welfare checks for vulnerable individuals, including those with mental health conditions.
Comparison of Heatwave Impacts
| Impact Area | Physical Health | Mental Health |
|---|---|---|
| Mortality | 2,700 deaths in UK | Increased suicide risk |
| Hospital Admissions | Heatstroke, dehydration | Anxiety, depression spikes |
| Daily Functioning | Fatigue, headaches | Irritability, poor concentration |
Key Takeaways for Protecting Vulnerable People
- Heatwaves kill thousands and worsen mental health conditions
- Daily welfare checks can save lives during extreme heat
- Climate action directly benefits mental health outcomes
