Brendon McCullum is complicating England's hunt for a new Test coach, as candidates must work alongside the man they would replace. The ECB faces a unique challenge in finding a coach who accepts a split role with white-ball duties, especially with the Ashes and World Cup on the horizon.
Why the England Test Coach Role Is Hard to Fill
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is struggling to appoint a new Test coach because the successful candidate will not have full control. Brendon McCullum was sacked as Test coach earlier this month, but he remains involved with the white-ball setup. High-profile candidates have reportedly been unwilling to work within this structure, preferring full oversight of senior men's teams or finding the dynamic too awkward.

Schedule Conflicts and Player Availability
The 2024 international schedule adds further complexity. The Test side will be the focus until the Ashes end in early August, but then the ODI team takes priority ahead of the World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia (October–November). White-ball coach and Test coach may clash over multi-format players like Harry Brook. For instance, a white-ball coach might demand Brook play the five-match ODI series against Pakistan starting the summer, while the Test coach could insist he focus on the one-off Test against Bangladesh that begins less than 48 hours later.
| Coach Role | Priority Period | Key Event |
|---|---|---|
| Test Coach | Until early August | Ashes series |
| White-Ball Coach | October–November | ODI World Cup |
Rob Key, ECB managing director of men's cricket, initially hoped to have a new coach before the Pakistan Test series starting August 19. However, the ECB is now resigned to a longer process. The gap between the Pakistan series (ending September 13) and the South Africa tour (starting in December) provides an 87-day window, allowing the board to prioritize the best appointment over the quickest.
