Charley Hull Scratchcard Prank Sparks Backlash: Golf Star 2026

Charley Hull, the English golf star, has refused to apologize after her £100,000 scratchcard prank on caddie Adam Woodward sparked controversy at the Women's Open. Hull, known for her carefree personality, tricked Woodward with a fake scratchcard bought from a Blackpool joke shop, filming his euphoric reaction that turned to despair. Critics called the stunt cruel, but Hull remains unapologetic, telling reporters, "People need to lighten up."

Charley Hull's Unapologetic Response

After shooting a two-under-par 69 in the first round at Royal Lytham & St Annes, Hull addressed the backlash directly. She explained that she deletes social media from her phone during tournament weeks to stay focused, but she's aware of the criticism. "People that have complaints about it, I would say loosen up," Hull said. "I think people need to lighten up if they're taking that too seriously because it was pretty funny."

Hull emphasized that Woodward, who has been her caddie for most of her professional career, saw the humor in the prank afterward. "He thought it was funny after, he is not uptight," she added. When asked if she'd do it again, Hull replied, "100%." She even promised to buy Woodward 100 real scratchcards at the end of the week.

The Prank: What Happened?

The prank unfolded on the eve of the Women's Open, when Hull gave Woodward a scratchcard that appeared to show a £100,000 win. Woodward's initial excitement was captured on video, but the joy quickly faded when he realized the card was fake. The video, which Hull shared, drew mixed reactions—some found it hilarious, others deemed it mean-spirited.

Hull's playful nature is well-documented in golf circles, but this incident has sparked a broader conversation about the line between humor and cruelty. However, Hull is unfazed, insisting that her relationship with Woodward remains strong and that the prank was all in good fun.

Women's Open Leaderboard: Hull Trails Thitikul

On the course, Hull's opening 69 left her five shots behind the early leader, Atthaya "Jeeno" Thitikul of Thailand. Thitikul, who has been remarkably consistent in majors with 11 top-10 finishes since 2021, is still seeking her first major victory. Interestingly, Thitikul won top amateur honors at Royal Lytham in 2018 as a 15-year-old, making this venue a sentimental favorite.

Hull, known for her aggressive play and short-game brilliance, will need to close the gap over the next three rounds. Her unapologetic attitude off the course may fuel her competitive fire on it.

Comparison: Hull vs. Thitikul at Royal Lytham

Both players are yet to win a major, but Thitikul's consistency in majors is impressive. Hull, however, has the experience of playing on home soil and a vocal crowd behind her.
