DIY Garden Bench Made from Aerated Concrete (Gasbeton) 2026

Looking for a unique and durable addition to your outdoor space? This DIY garden bench made from aerated concrete (gasbeton) is not only lightweight and insulating but also boasts impressive compressive strength. It’s a charming project that adds a playful touch to any garden or patio. Whether you’re sprucing up your outdoor patio furniture collection or starting fresh, this bench is a conversation starter.

Materials and Tools for Your DIY Garden Bench

To build this bench, you’ll need two long blocks of aerated concrete, approximately 620 mm long, 450 mm wide, and 150 mm thick. These can be created by bonding eight slabs (75x250x625 mm each) with specific adhesive—easier to cut with a jigsaw. You’ll also need a lower crossbar and the bench top, treated with impregnator and oil, secured with L-brackets and expansion anchors designed for aerated concrete. A piece of rope stiffened with outdoor PVA glue forms the pigtail. For all your home improvement needs, check out our selection of tools and materials.

Project: Pig-Shaped Outdoor Bench Legs

Each square on the diagram equals 5x5 cm. The pig-shaped legs are the highlight of this design, giving the bench a whimsical, rustic feel. Once shaped and painted, they connect to the seat and crossbar. This project is perfect for those who love garden supplies and creative outdoor decor.

Working with Aerated Concrete (Gasbeton)

• Aerated concrete is easy to work with using woodworking tools (except chisels) due to its relative friability, which won’t damage saw or rasp teeth.
• Shape semi-blocks with a jigsaw, band saw, or coping saw.
• Smooth edges with a hand rasp or rotary tool on a flexible shaft.
• Use specific adhesive for aerated concrete to bond the piglet elements securely.

Assembly and Finishing Touches

Attach the L-brackets to the legs, then screw the bench top—made of four slats joined by two crossbars—into place. Complete the look by painting the gasbeton with a pinkish enamel. For added comfort, consider pairing your bench with outdoor decor like cushions or a rug to define the seating area.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Can I use this bench outdoors in all weather?

Yes, aerated concrete is durable, but we recommend sealing it with an impregnator and outdoor oil to protect against moisture. For extra weather resistance, store it under a pergola or gazebo during harsh seasons.

2. What tools do I need to cut aerated concrete?

A jigsaw with a fine-tooth blade, band saw, or coping saw works best. You can also use a hand rasp for smoothing edges. Find all needed tools in our home improvement shop.

3. How do I attach the bench top to the legs?

Use L-brackets screwed into expansion anchors specifically designed for aerated concrete to prevent cracking. Then secure the wooden seat slats. For a matching outdoor setup, explore our dining tables and sofas for your patio.

4. Can I customize the shape of the legs?

Absolutely! The pig design is just a suggestion. You can create any shape—like geometric or floral patterns—using the same techniques. Add wall decor or mirrors nearby to enhance your garden’s aesthetic.

5. What paint should I use for aerated concrete?

Use a high-quality exterior enamel or masonry paint. A pinkish tone gives the pig design a playful look, but you can choose any color to match your outdoor lighting and outdoor heating accessories.
