Why Build an Outdoor Cabinet?

A large terrace, covered with a pyramidal skylight, often has a metal outdoor cabinet used as a pantry for bulky dishes, jars, and provisions that don't fit in kitchen cabinets. In this outdoor area, there's also a lack of storage for small gardening tools, irrigation supplies, plants, soil, and saucers. To increase storage capacity and hide items from view, we decided to utilize the entire available wall between the existing cabinet and the side parapet. We built a wooden outdoor cabinet about three meters long, featuring a front frame divided into three equal-width compartments with seven doors. One door is a hopper-style opening for a recycling compartment.

Step-by-Step Construction
1. Frame and Base
The base of the frame rests on adjustable feet to compensate for floor unevenness, while internal shelves sit on brackets anchored to the back wall, which becomes an integral part of the cabinet. Use sturdy materials for longevity—browse our sheds collection for durable outdoor storage ideas.
2. Doors and Hardware
The left door of each compartment is locked from the inside with a small cylinder bolt that closes into a hole on the frame. The right door is locked from the outside with another two-part latch bolt fixed to the respective uprights. The beadboard cladding is attached to the inside of the frame. For stylish and secure hardware, consider our home improvement collection for hinges and handles.
3. Interior Lining and Lighting
The metal cabinet is lined internally with polystyrene panels for aesthetics and light reflection—an LED lamp is installed inside for dark hours. This not only enhances visibility but also adds a modern touch. Check out our lighting collection for energy-efficient options.
4. Hinge Installation
Butterfly hinges that allow door movement are fixed with wood screws onto 50×50 mm frames and hex head screws. Proper hinge placement ensures smooth operation. For additional outdoor seating or dining setups, explore our outdoor patio furniture collection.
5. Shelf and Compartment Layout
The design (not to scale) shows the number and opening sides of full-height doors for the first two compartments, and half-doors for the third. Customize your shelves to fit pots, tools, or recycling bins. Our bookcases and shelving units collection offers versatile storage solutions.
Protective Roof and Finishing Touches
Add a protective roof canopy to shield the cabinet from rain and sun. This extends its lifespan and keeps contents dry. For outdoor decor ideas, browse our outdoor decor collection to complement your build.
