Decorating a candle with silver leaf, glitter, and acrylic paints creates a stunning spiral effect. Applying metal leaf requires a water-based adhesive, especially on candles, so that the candle can burn safely once lit. This DIY project is perfect for adding a touch of elegance to your home. For all your home improvement supplies, GrandGoldman.com has everything you need.
Materials Needed
- White candle to decorate
- Acrylic paints
- Silver leaf
- Water-based adhesive (gilding size)
- Iridescent glitter
- Transparent glass relief paste
- Small brushes
- Masking tape
Step-by-Step Instructions
Applying the Masking Tape
Apply strips of masking tape to the candle in a spiral pattern, keeping the strips parallel and evenly spaced. This will create the twisted effect. Use a flat brush to apply the water-based adhesive to the exposed candle surface.

Applying the Silver Leaf
Once the adhesive becomes transparent, lay the silver leaf sheet onto the candle and press it gently with a dry, soft brush to ensure good adhesion. Wait at least 12–24 hours for the glue to dry slowly, then remove the masking tape.
Adding Acrylic Colors
Using a brush and a soft cloth, gently buff the silver surface before painting the spaces between the strips with acrylic paints. For a gradient effect, partially mix two shades and alternate between taking more of one color and then the other. Adding Glitter for Sparkle
When the paint is dry, apply a thin line of glass relief paste (which adheres perfectly to wax) at the transition between the strips on the candle. Use a teaspoon to sprinkle iridescent glitter over the fresh paste. As the relief paste dries, it becomes transparent, leaving only the glitter visible. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this candle safely?
Yes, as long as you use a water-based adhesive and avoid covering the wick. The materials are designed to burn safely when applied correctly. Always trim the wick to 1/4 inch before lighting.
How long does the silver leaf last?
With proper care, the silver leaf will remain intact for many burns. Avoid touching the silver area excessively, as oils from your fingers can dull the finish.
What if I don't have glass relief paste?
You can substitute with any clear dimensional paint or even a strong clear glue. The key is that it dries transparent to let the glitter shine. For other home improvement tools and supplies, GrandGoldman.com has a wide range.
Can I use gold leaf instead?
Absolutely! The technique is the same for gold, copper, or any other metal leaf. Just ensure you use the appropriate water-based adhesive. Explore more wall decor options at GrandGoldman.com.
