Building your own terrace planters is a rewarding DIY project that lets you create custom-sized containers for large pots or direct planting. With a few reclaimed deck boards and some basic tools, you can craft sturdy, beautiful planters that enhance your outdoor space.

Start by sourcing some deck boards—perhaps broken in two and no longer usable by builders—it's not difficult to find them. For each planter, cut 6 pieces 600 mm long and 8 pieces 524 mm long for the sides and bottom, 4 pieces 38x38x700 mm for the legs/side supports, 4 pieces 38x38x448 mm for the bottom supports, and 4 pieces 76x38x600 mm for the top frame.

Dremel mini-tools and their accessories are your best allies for this work: especially the compact DSM20 mini-saw, equipped with carbide discs, parallel guide, and miter guide, and the Dremel 3000 with its drilling and sanding accessories. Inside the container, you can place a large pot or line it with sturdy plastic sheeting and fill with soil for planting directly.

How to Build Terrace Planters

To get the boards to the specified sizes, set the cutting depth to 20 mm and cut first from one side then the other, sliding the guide against a reference strip. Adjust the guide so it rests against the board edge to precisely cut parallel to the long sides for the legs/side supports and bottom supports. Use the miter guide to bevel the ends of the top frame boards at 45°.

Mark the screw positions on the side supports and pre-drill with the Dremel 3000 fitted with titanium bits for the joining screws. Start assembling one side of the container by joining 3 boards of 524 mm and two legs/side supports. Insert self-tapping screws Ø 5×65 mm with a manual or electric screwdriver. Repeat with 3 boards 600 mm long; join the two panels at a right angle and build two identical ones—assembling these completes the container perimeter.

Using the 448 mm strips, prepare the support frame for the base boards and screw it to them. Mark points for the top frame, pre-drill, and insert screws so they sit slightly recessed. Fill all visible holes with wood filler and sand smooth with the Dremel 3000 fitted with appropriate abrasive discs.

Essential Tools & Materials

  • Deck boards (reclaimed or new) – find quality lumber at Home Improvement
  • Dremel DSM20 mini-saw with carbide discs
  • Dremel 3000 rotary tool with titanium drill bits and sanding discs
  • Self-tapping screws Ø 5×65 mm
  • Wood filler and sandpaper
  • Sturdy plastic sheeting for lining (optional)

Planter Assembly Tips

For a polished look, bevel all visible edges slightly with sandpaper. If using the planter directly for soil, drill a few small drainage holes in the bottom boards or use a liner pot. For a cohesive outdoor aesthetic, consider matching your planters with Outdoor Patio Furniture and Outdoor Decor.

Line the interior with heavy-duty plastic sheeting, ensure drainage holes in the bottom, and elevate the planter slightly on feet or casters. Using a pot inside the box also extends its life. Check Sheds for storing tools and materials.

Can I use these planters indoors?

Absolutely! They make stylish indoor plant stands for large floor plants. Just add a waterproof tray or liner. Pair with Wall Decor and Rugs to create a lush indoor garden corner.

What size pots fit in these planters?

The dimensions given (600 mm x 524 mm internal) accommodate standard 40-50 cm diameter pots. For custom sizes, adjust the board lengths proportionally. See Outdoor Lighting to illuminate your planters at night.

How do I finish the wood for a weather-resistant surface?

Apply two coats of exterior-grade wood stain or paint, allowing drying time between coats. Sand lightly between coats for a smooth finish. For added protection, use a clear marine varnish. Visit Home Improvement for all finishing supplies.
