DIY Wood and Glass Coffee Table | Step-by-Step Guide 2026

This DIY wood and glass coffee table is made with an MDF base and a round glass top. The shaped MDF base supports a crystal-clear glass top that lets you see through to the support structure. The shaping only affects the sides of the supports and is done after careful tracing of the profiles. It's important to keep their heights regular to avoid any issues with the glass slab resting on them. The interlocking grooves must be cut with precision to ensure the legs fit together perfectly. Precision and good finishing are also needed for the two circular cuts that create the additional ring.

The coloring of the wood and glass coffee table is up to you, achievable with glossy acrylic enamels.

What You'll Need for a Glass-Top Coffee Table

• 19 mm MDF
• 10 mm thick glass
• Universal primer
• Glossy acrylic enamel
• Ruler and pencil
• Jigsaw
• Paintbrush

DIY Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Trace and Cut the Base Panels

To make the various pieces of the wood and glass coffee table, draw a regular grid on the panels and enlarge it from the cutting plan. You can modify the shapes as you like while respecting the interlocking points. The two panels that form the base have the same shape, so you can draw the template on cardboard and use it as a guide on the panels. Use a grease pencil for tracing.

Step 2: Cut the Interlocking Grooves

The grooves that allow the two supports to interlock should be as wide as the thickness of the panels. They must reach halfway up the height, from the bottom on one piece and from the top on the other. The cross-shaped support of the wood and glass coffee table must be flat, without any protrusions from the two supports. It's a good idea to do a test assembly of the two pieces and refine them to eliminate any inaccuracies.

Step 3: Apply Primer and Paint

Before finishing, treat the entire structure with two coats of universal primer, which fills any pores and prepares the surfaces for the colored enamel. The finish is achieved with several colors in contrasting shades. For a professional look, consider using home improvement supplies like high-quality brushes and sandpaper.

Step 4: Add Felt Pads and Place the Glass

At the base of the support, you can glue some felt pads to make it easier to move without scratching the floor. Finally, place the glass top on the base. For a cohesive living room look, pair your new table with sofas and rugs from our collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use different wood instead of MDF?

Yes, you can use plywood or solid wood, but MDF is easier to shape and paint. For other DIY projects, check out our garden supplies for outdoor builds.

What thickness of glass should I use?

10 mm is recommended for safety and durability. Tempered glass is even stronger if you can source it.

How do I ensure the glass stays in place?

You can use clear silicone adhesive dots or rubber bumpers on the MDF base to prevent slipping.

Can I customize the shape of the base?

Absolutely! Feel free to modify the template to create unique curves or angles. Just maintain the interlocking dimensions.

What paint finish is best?

Glossy acrylic enamel gives a sleek, modern look that's easy to clean. For a softer aesthetic, try matte finishes.
