When it comes to waterproofing paved terraces and balconies without demolition, you need specialized products that can restore impermeability, consolidate surfaces, eliminate infiltrations (even in the presence of cracks), and create a durable protective layer. In this guide, we'll walk you through a two-step process using professional-grade solutions that are perfect for home improvement projects.
Understanding the Challenge
Whether you're dealing with a paved terrace or a balcony that still needs its waterproof membrane installed, the approach differs. For existing paved surfaces, the key is to avoid demolition and instead apply a liquid waterproofing system that penetrates and seals. This is where having the right garden supplies and protective treatments comes into play.

Two Essential Products for Waterproofing Paved Terraces
We've tested a sequential two-product system that delivers outstanding results:
- Phase Zero Cleaner & Primer: A powerful concentrated degreaser that removes stubborn dirt and prepares the surface.
- Anti-Infiltration Protective Consolidator: The actual waterproofing layer that seals cracks and prevents water ingress.
Watch the Application Video
Before you start, it's helpful to see the process in action. The video below demonstrates how to apply these products for terrace and balcony waterproofing. For a complete setup, consider adding outdoor patio furniture to enjoy your refreshed space.
Step-by-Step Waterproofing Process
Phase Zero: Deep Cleaning with Remover & Concentrated Primer
This is a non-negotiable first step. A product like Salvaterrazza® FaseZero is a viscous, powerful degreaser that rapidly removes even the most stubborn dirt from stone, porcelain gres, terracotta, exposed brick, klinker, and concrete. It's also suitable for walls. Available in 1-liter or 5-liter containers, this cleaner ensures the surface is perfectly prepared. While you're at it, check out outdoor decor to complement your newly waterproofed area.
The Waterproofing Application
After cleaning, apply the protective consolidator. This product penetrates deep into the substrate, filling micro-cracks and forming a flexible, breathable membrane that stops water infiltration while allowing vapor to escape. It's ideal for restoring the waterproofing of flat roofs and paved surfaces without the mess of traditional membranes. To complete the look, browse outdoor lighting to highlight your terrace in the evenings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I apply this waterproofing over existing tiles?
A: Yes, this system is specifically designed for paved terraces and balconies without removing the existing flooring. It penetrates through the joints and seals from within. For added comfort, consider pairing your project with outdoor heating to extend your terrace season.
Q: How long does the treatment last?
A: With proper application and maintenance, the waterproofing can last 5–10 years depending on weather exposure and foot traffic. Reapply the protective layer as needed. To keep your outdoor space organized, add storage benches for cushions and tools.
Q: Is it safe for plants and pets?
A: Most modern waterproofing products are water-based and low in VOCs once cured. Always check the manufacturer's guidelines, but generally they are safe for use around plants and pets after drying. For garden lovers, explore greenhouses to protect your plants.
Q: Can I use this on a balcony with metal railings?
A: Absolutely. The product can be applied around metal fixtures, but ensure they are clean and dry first. For a complete balcony makeover, consider curtains for privacy and shade.
Q: Do I need to seal the joints separately?
A: The liquid consolidator naturally flows into joints and cracks, sealing them as part of the application. For extra protection on wide joints, you may use a compatible sealant. To enhance your outdoor dining experience, shop BBQ grills & outdoor cooking supplies.

With the right two-step product system and a bit of elbow grease, you can restore your outdoor living space and enjoy it for years to come. Don't forget to furnish your refreshed terrace with outdoor patio furniture and rugs for added comfort and style.
