Meta's new AI glasses aspire to... replace the mobile phone 2026

Meta announced the launch of three pairs of AI glasses – including thefirst Ray-Bans with a built-in augmented reality display.

Meta Ray-Ban Display will be the first smart glasses with a heads-up display from a mainstream brand –– since the failure of Google Glass. They use a classic Wayfarer style so they don't look like a tech product, and they have a camera, speakers and a microphone.

The latest model, the $799 Meta Ray-Ban Display, features a small, sharp screen on the right lens. It can displaytext messages, video calls, turn-by-turn directions on maps, visual resultsfrom Meta AI queries, photos, music controls, and a digital viewfinder for the camera.

The screen appears when the user interacts with the glasses, but is not visible from the outside. An LED light alerts others when the camera is active.

The glasses were unveiled by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at a special event on Wednesday.

"Glasses are the only means by which you can let artificial intelligence see what you see, hear what you hear" and ultimately create what you want to create, such as images or videos, Zuckerberg said, speaking at the tech giant's headquarters in Menlo Park, California.

Similar to the company's popular Ray-Ban Meta AI sunglasses, the new glasses feature touch panels on the arms and voice control for instant interaction.

They also come with a waterproof wristband that can detect electrical pulses on the forearm to control the phone-style interface on the lens using gestures. The Neural Band fits like a smartwatch without a screen and can detect pinches, swipes, taps, rotations and other familiar movements, including using a virtual d-pad with your thumb. Later this year it will enable finger handwriting.

This new release is a major attempt by Meta to create its own technology ecosystem, competing with companies like Apple and Google. Since launching its first VR set in 2016, Meta has aimed to attract users away from mainstream platforms.

"This looks like something that will allow you to keep your phone in your pocket more and more throughout the day," said Andrew Bosworth, Meta's chief technology officer. He added that the mobile phone will not disappear, but the glasses offer a more convenient way to access its most popular functions and applications.
