Australia's most merged footy club, Ouyen United Kangas, embodies the enduring country spirit of the Mallee region in Victoria, where 43 clubs have consolidated into one over a century. This remarkable story of mergers reflects the challenges of rural-urban drift and the resilience of local communities.
The Birth of Ouyen United Kangas
The journey began in 1981 when Kiamal, a club with only one game played by 101-year-old Norm Vallance, merged with arch-rivals Tiega to form Ouyen Rovers. This was just the start of a series of consolidations that would reshape country football in north-west Victoria. By 1998, Ouyen Rovers merged with Tempy-Gorya-Patchewollock (TGP) to create Ouyen United, and later with Walpeup-Underbool in 2015, forming the current Ouyen United Kangas.

Why So Many Mergers?
The Mallee region, once dismissed as a “worthless wasteland” by surveyor Maj Thomas Mitchell, saw a boom in settlement after the railway arrived in 1910. However, as farming declined and populations shifted to cities, small towns struggled to field teams. Rural-urban drift forced once-fierce rivals to unite, creating clubs like Ganmain Grong Grong Matong and Devon-Welshpool-Won Wron-Woodside.
| Club Name | Year Merged | Number of Original Clubs |
