The image of a 12-year-old war casualty recovering in a hospital in Amman, Jordan, serves as a haunting reminder of the human toll of armed conflict. Taken by photographer Alessio Mamo, this photograph documents Manal, a young girl from Kirkuk, Iraq, who suffered severe burns from a missile explosion. Her story, part of the project The Hospital of All the Wars, highlights the resilience of children caught in war zones and the critical role of medical care.
Manal’s face is protected by a special mask she must wear for five hours daily to shield her skin from light. Around her, the room is filled with colorful drawings and a balloon—small comforts in a place of healing. She underwent extensive surgery and remains under long-term treatment at the Médecins Sans Frontières Al-Mowasah hospital, which treats patients from Iraq, Gaza, Yemen, Syria, and Lebanon.
