A new research that was recently published clarifies, or rather reassures anyone who owns an electric vehicle. In essence, the research confirms in the most characteristic way, that they do not emit the radiation that some people think they do.

In particular, the German automobile club ADAC recently decided to study the electromagnetic fields inside electric vehicles and discovered that both drivers and passengers are exposed to very low levels of radiation.

The study concludes that electric vehicles are no more dangerous than any other modern car. In some cases, they emit even less electromagnetic radiation than vehicles with thermal engines.

How the study was conducted!

The study was commissioned by Germany's Federal Agency for Radiation Protection and included the study of 11 electric vehicles, 2 hybrids and a conventional petrol model. In total, ten sensors were placed on a test dummy and changed positions twice while the vehicles were being driven and charged.

What they wanted to find out is how strong the magnetic fields are in real operating conditions and whether they approach the limits considered dangerous.

During the tests, the team observed some small increases in the magnetic field during rapid acceleration and braking, or when electrical components are activated.

Of course, as they comment, these small increases in intensity are not unusual for the magnetic field in vehicles based on multi-volt circuits and an electric motor.

What the numbers show!

According to ADAC the electric fields reaching the human body under these conditions remained well below the recommended limits. In fact, the highest intensities were recorded in the legs and not in the head area. In short, there is nothing for the driver inside the cabin to fear when driving an electric vehicle.

However, a surprise discovery came from a feature we all use without a second thought. The reason for the heated seats, which produced some of the strongest electromagnetic fields. This was observed not only in electric vehicles, but also in plug-in hybrids, as well as thermal engines, in the research vehicles. But even then, the numbers weren't dangerous.

And as for charging?
However, the charging did not make any difference either.

More specifically, during charging of an electric vehicle from the outlet, the measurements showed an increase around the area of the outlet. Although these radiation levels remained within acceptable limits, what is even more important is that the fast charge produced weaker fields than a slower charge.
